vocal kitty Mark Unseen   May 12 05:31 UTC 1995

Recently my cat has started something odd (well, maybe not odd, I don't
know). He is *very* vocal. He can have a clean catbox, plenty of food
and water, and every door in the house open. But he still wanders around
meowing constantly.

Is he sick? He doesn't look sick. Is he bored? probably not too bored-
I pet him and my 2 kids won't leave him alone. He's not injured, nor
anything else I can figure out. This meow is not a happy meow or anything-
it really sounds like he's whining or crying.

any ideas?

Some cats, like mine, just *do* that. No idea why, except perhaps for
some childhood bad experience?

Alrighty, I thought it was time to bring this back to life. :)

Melissa (morgaene) recently made an addition to the little family.
To go along with her all white cat (bernadette) we've now welcomed
all black Willoughby (nicknames are Pidge- white cat, Woobie- black
cat). Woobie is a rather tall gentleman and has discovered that if
he stands on his back legs he can reach doorknobs with his front paws,
and if he turns the knob the door opens... Luckily for us he hasn't
figured out dead bolts yet- I think Pidge is working on that one.

Anyways, Woobie is also very talkative. For no real reason at all,
he'll enter a room and say hi, if you enter a room he's in he'll
meow a welcome... I thought that he would feel right at home in
a "Vocal Kitty' item. Right now he's looking up at me wondering
when I'll feed him. (He's of the opinion that it's been three
weeks since he's been fed, when I know for a fact that he ate this
morning... <grin> )

Can my vocal guinea pig join this item?

Sure why not? Pidge likes to watch them (not eat them or anything)
and I don't think Woobie knows what they are.... ;)

I recently adopted a cat, "Buttercup," from a family who had two
other cats plus a dog, rabbit, and I don't know what else. Ever
since I brought Buttercup to my home (where she's the only feline
and I'm the only human) she's been very vocal (crying?) She seems
very content when she sits on my lap, purring, and being very
affectionate. But when she's not on my lap she's usually crying.
Does she miss her other cat friends? How long does it typically
take for a cat to adjust to a change like this? I'll admit, she's
only been here about an hour or so.

She may just have been insecure about being in a new place. Cats
get very stressed out about change. They just don't like it. You
at least were familiar, as a person if not as an individual. She
was probably also calling to see if any of her friends were around
and she just couldn't see them.

How is she doing now?

She seems to be doing much better now. She'll occasionally go stand
by the garage door and meow, but I think that's just because she likes
to play out there but doesn't get to go out there often.

But of course, and if you were to open the door to let her go play out
there, she may suddenly change her mind and decide that she doesn't
actually want to go outside... <grins>

Just reminds me of when I brought Sasha home for the first time- she
stayed glued to my side, same thing happens when I go to my parents...

My cat's just very chatty by nature. He looks up at me and says "Rowr?"
He will even meow back to me in the same tone of voice I talk to him.
We talk back and forth. I guess I can speak cat language.

Meow meows a lot. She has a great variety of meows, and I've learned which
indicate which needs. Some are just because she likes to Meow, espcexially
when others are talking but very rarely when she's alone. She's typically
silent only if she's alone, asleep, or in my lap and not wanting to move.
She's been this way for all the 7 years I've known her..

Sasha's always been quite chatty... So has Alex. But now his voice
sounds more like a whiney old man. <laughs>

Sasha doesn't like to be all alone. While not a lap cat she at least
likes to be in the same room as the people. It's kinda funny, she likes
to sleep under the covers, sometimes all tucked in with just her head
poking out. It's sooo cute. <grins>

Awww...

Harlis meows in this panicky, rapid way when his food bowl is empty or
when he thinks I've left him. When I get out of the shower, he runs into
the bathroom and meows like crazy ("Oh my God! I thought you'd died!
Don't ever leave me like that!"). He used to bawl when I took out the
garbage.

I will be in Europe for 3 weeks in July. I'll have people looking in on
him and playing with him. But I'm gonna miss him soooo much, and he'll
miss me. :(

When my brother was away from his cat for 2 weeks, the poor cat
(Micio--Italian for "cat") licked all the fur off of his front feet and rubbed
it off his face... Li'l guy, a blue persian, was a mess...

Awww, the poor thing. :(

I generally don't shut the bathroom door all the way... Sasha will pull
the carpeting up if I do... She has to keep her eye on me. <grins>

Oh, i don't shut the bathroom door either. He won't go in while the
water's running :)

Heh... Sasha comes running. She likes to drink from the sink and both
she and Woobie like to lie in the dry tub.
