Armpit Sweat and Cats Mark Unseen   Oct 26 17:35 UTC 2001

I have noticed on occasion that as soon as I scratch myself under the arms
and if my cat is nearby, the odor always seems to have a very catnip-like
effect on her. has anyone else noticed anything similar or do I just have a
weird cat?

Well. I have not noticed that my body odor has a catnip like effect on
cats but then I have never scratched myself under my armpits and then
put my hand in my cats face though.

Naturally I will try that later tonight when I get home

I think a cat's interest is natural. They evolved to hunt by both
scent and sight. They are checking you out as prey.

Maybe, but it still seems like something that I have never heard anyone else
say before. As for as the prey bit, she does seem to bite a bit whebn she
smells the sweat. Go figure.

This reminds me of the big Usenet thread a couple of years back in
rec.pets.cats about cats having stinky feet just like humans. Lots
of very amusing anecdotes about cat foot-sniffing attempts. ;-)

What is the catnip-like effect?

As I understand it, your cat knows you from anyone else only by your
scent and (somewhat) the sound of your voice. The very intense influx of
you-smell may overstimulate her a bit, which tends to manifest in biting
behavior.

On a personal note, my cat insists on smelling my breath anytime we
haven't seen each other for more than an hour or so. Hubby says she's
policing my dieting efforts. <smart ass!>

eeeew! (Thanks for making me laugh out loud!)

I had to stop putting lotion on my hands at bedtime because for some
completely unknown reason, my cat LOVES to lick lotion. (Every type I've
tried.) Weird sensation to wake up to at 3am...

I need to teach Gomez that french kissing is NOT appropriate...

re: 12.
Thanks. I did try that. She dig-taps at them until I wake up.
