Our cat Simone :: 1985 - 1999 Mark Unseen   Sep 25 07:16 UTC 1999

Our cat Simone died at 2:20 this morning. She'd been living on borrowed
time since she went into the first crisis in early July, just before
Leslie left for her summer study program in Austria. For a while
the goal was simply to keep her alive until Leslie got back in
mid-August, and we made that goal. I think I invested a little too much
in the idea that she might stabilize and stay with us for another few
months, but her strength went into a steep downward spiral this week.
Even two nights ago she was still interested enough to come and sit with
us, and we took her outside where she enjoyed stalking a few moths
and eating some grass. But she went into a steep downward slide
Friday night.

I'll probably write a few more stories about Simone in the next few
days. Right now it's hard to accept that her body is in a box next
to me on the sofa, and she's not going to jump out of it.
We're planning to bury her under a rosebush in the back yard Saturday
afternoon.

14 years is a long time for a cat.
Sounds like she got lucky in the
human department, too.

Sorry about your loss, Ken. I know that its hard to lose a pet that's
been part of your life for a long time.

I'm sorry, Ken. I will have to be committed when my cat dies, I know.
Simone (a wonderful name for a cat!) sounds like she had a wonderful
life with two parents who loved her very much. She was lucky to have
such a good home.

Oh, Ken. I'm so sorry. My own cats are now both 13, and it's been
difficult to watch them get older. Like beeswing, I can't imagine having
to deal with losing them... My condolences to you and Leslie.

My deepest sympathies. It makes me realize how much I care for my cats
and how much I will hate to lose them when the time comes. They've
been a part of my family's life for years.

We went to my cousin's wedding in Long Island last weekend, and it
turns out that the father of the bride (my uncle) lost his
beloved 8-year-old dog to cancer just a few days before the wedding.
He said "I'm so sorry about your cat," I said "I'm so sorry about
your dog," and we had a big hug.

I think Simone is haunting us. I keep imagining her too-long
toenails clicking on the floor. Also, our young cat Katya keeps
looking at places where she might be, as if she (Simone) were
there. I also think Katya is feeling quite lonely, since our
other surviving cat (Little Bit) is quite old (17) and
completely unwilling to play.
