Pet Tricks Mark Unseen   May 26 13:16 UTC 1999

Interesting pet tricks. All pets have little things they do that just
endear them to us, or mke us laugh or whatever. So what things, or
tricks, do your pets do?

My Sasha has this fascination with my roomie's fishing pole (minus hook
of course). Melissa will cast and Sasha will go racing to get the sinker
and will then carry it around in her mouth and generally goes from the
living room area to my room. At this point, Melissa reels her in and they
start all over. The other day Meg (eeyore) was over and she and I were
sitting on the floor and Melissa and Sasha were playing. Sasha had the
sinker in her mouth and was trotting around, looking inordinately
pleased with herself, and trotted in a circle around Meg and I... pretty
much wrapping us up in fishing line. She's never done that before, but
she liked it, and kept try to do it again... Meg and I laughed...

Okay, more later.

Bee-Jay, who loves to sit in people's laps, seems to test people... She sits
up on her hind end in my lap, puts her front paws on my chest, and then leans
back such that if I'm not paying attention, she'll fall in the floor. (She's
not fallen yet...)

Early in the morning, if she gets out of bed for some reason and she's groggy
and tired and wants back in bed, she can't seem to jump up all the way on the
bed. Instead, she paws at the edge of the bed until I wake up, pick her up,
and put her on the bed with me at which point she curls up and goes back to
sleep until no earlier than 10a.m.

She has this rag-doll squeaky toy, along w/ a few other toys. She loves to
play fetch, and sometimes she plays the game by herself. She runs and get
the toy--the rag-doll being at least the size of her own head--and then runs
around, usually tripping on it, with the doll in her mouth.
Occasionally--well, frequently--she'll whip her head around rapidly, and
repeatedly from side to side, and then let go of the toy. Normally, this ends
in her being able to chase after it again. Once in a while, this ends in a
toy's being in the sink or on the stove (dangerous...) or in the bathtub.
When it was once in teh bathtub, she jumped in after in and found the tub's
surface to be too smooth for her to get traction to get back out of the tub...
She made slight whimpering noises until I found her and got her out of the
tub, at which point she started the game again...

And those are a few cute things done in the days of Bee-Jay the Shih-Tzu...

<grins> I can picture a little dog doing that... I've found that for
small kittens the bathtub is a good 'keep them out of trouble' place.

Does Bee-Jay prefer that you play with her, or is she content to just
play with her rag-doll by herself?

It depends, though on what I don't know, with reference to her playing alone
of with someone. Sometimes she doesn't bring her toy to people but plays
happily. Sometimes she tries to put it in a person's hand. In any manner,
she prefers to be in the same room with or at least near people while she's
awake (and asleep, really...). She's currently napping after a romp outside,
but as soon as I log off and walk in the other room, she'll be at my heels.

As I've said, Gomez plays fetch with his bell/ball thing. He'll also
jump up to my shoulder on command.

Sasha will give kisses on request, most of the time... it depends on what
else is going on in the room at the time.

Harlis has no interest in toys. He does like rubber bands.

Harlis is affectionate in the morning and will proivde kisses.

My brother's cat, Micio, is fascinated by wires, which is lovely and perfect
given that my brother is an Air Force broadcast technician...

my cat iggy loves her inflatable scream doll.
it is of the famous figure in the edvard munch painting "the scream".

she really enjoys being bopped with it, especially if you
hum the hawaii five-o theme song.

she will come running out of another room from a deep sleep as soon
as she hears boppy noises and the theme song.

Ah, okay, that's kinda what I expected... My roomate had an
inflatable chair... the cats were afraid of it at first...
But then my lovey Sasha decided she liked it and would sleep on it...
And now... it won't hold air... <grins>

Amazing trickery?
Her Grace has learned to turn the bedroom light on/off.
The deal: a ceiling fan hangs above our bed, complete with pull chains
for controlling the fan speed and built-in light.
Pull chains? Need I explain?

Oh man.... <laughs> Sounds like she's too smart... <grins> Hopefully
when she's fully grown she won't have figured out door opening like
one of my cats is working on (everyonce and awhile he manages...)

My catten tragedy can fetch. She only fetches a platypus teenie beanie baby,
and brings it back to the same spot every time <no matter where *you* are
when you throw it.> It's just so cute though, she skips on the way back.
Makes a mother proud.

I can't find a spot where I've mentioned this before...
Kenn looks at his cat Ric, points a finger, says, "Bang!", and Ric falls
over on the spot. It is the most amazing thing, and he *will* do it for a
room full of people. Gypsi has seen this; he's been doing it for years.

The kitties will now "sit" for food, side by side, but BuckShot usually
sits up prairie dog style, while Ric just puts his butt on the floor.

My dog could deal cards. We stopped him when we caught him marking decks
and dealing aces to himself. ;)

okay, i have birdies. i have quite a few who like to give kisses.one in
particular, you can't tell what mood hes in. he either gives the sweetest
kisses, or the meanest bites.also, if hes in the mood, he'll come when he's
called!he also loves visitors (just ask omni about sparky) sparky is having
a love affair with two stuffed teddy bears, and a stuffed rabbit.then he sings
"pretty bird" to the rubber ducky in the bathroom.
hijinx likes to sit and try to speak.at the same time, he will bang his beak,
throw his head back and whistle. its quite a display!
i also have a couple of birdies (girls) that like to hang upside down like
a bat.i think they like the view.i read somewhere that means that they are
happy and all is right with thier world. how nice : )

Yeah, anyone who comes in the house gets Sparky on the shoulder, and should
you be annoyed by his presence, he will either bite, or will crawl down your
back right out of reach. But all in all he is a good bird.

I think it's time to wake this item back up a bit... for two reasons. 1.
My German Shepherd pup does a lot of things that are pretty goofy and worth
sharing. 2. We're always looking for ideas for new things to teach, because
she just LOVES to learn.

Baya's most recent trick that we're working on is called "let's dance."
(We're actually doing it to get her jumping up on people under control--if
ya can cue a behavior, it's a lot easier to end it as well.) So, for this,
I put my arm out and say, "Shall we dance," or anything similar including the
word "dance." Baya then jumps up onto her hind legs, puts both front paws
on my arm, and sometimes kisses my face. (Baya is getting pretty darn tall!)

(Crucial stats: Baya is a 7-month-old spayed female German Shepherd pup.
She weighs 50 pounds plus a little. She's largely black and has a black mask,
white belly, tan legs... Gigantic ears... Legs and tail disproportionately
long for her body. All in all, she's a gangly teenager.)

Aww, she sounds adorable! I'm sure she'll be just absolutely beautiful
once she is fully grown- past that awkward teenage phase. ;)

My older brother recently picked up a 16 month old white German
Shepherd named 'Princess Starshine' ( a name she came with...) who is
just beautiful- but needs a bit of help in the training department...
