Well, our little dog, Petey, broke a tooth. Nasty, with the pulp exposed.
The final bill to have it pulled was $236.00 and Petey is feeling sort of
listless. I broke one also, and had the crown put on today, my bill (after
insurance) was $213.

some people opt to get their critter a root canal
and a crown.

i have been out of touch with veterinary fees for
several years, but $236 seems a bit steep to me.
did they do anything else while your dog was anesthestised?

We had our cat's teeth cleaned around New Year's, and one of them had to be
pulled. It cost about $200 and he was not himself for at least 24 hours
thereafter (though two *weeks* later he felt much better).

My vet has now advised me to have my cat Dave's broken fang either root
canaled or pulled. He broke the tip off somehow years ago. The old vet (at
the same office) said just to keep an eye on it, but the current vet says that
bacteria will slowly work up the root and then cause a real mess. Comments?

It sounds like about half the story. If there is evidence of bacteria in
place already, it sort of makes sense, and (ceteris paribus) the younger the
better, but ... I'd ask more questions.

I think he's the former lead singer in Chicago.

My parents cat broke off part of a fang about 9 years ago, and he hasn't
had any problems with it. He looks kinda strange with only one fang, but he's
a stgrange cat anyways.

I would maybe try for a second opinion from another vet.

("Ceteris paribus" means, more or less, "Other things being equal")

I have found out that in cats poor dental hygiene can lead to sinus
infection, which can lead to pneumonia *and* renal failure. I guess
I`ll be more diligent in the future about vet-office cleanings.
