Lullabies? Mark Unseen   Sep 20 00:47 UTC 1993

We heard an interesting song on the radio this evening, Greg
Brown's "Might as well go to sleep" (alleged to be from a "kids' album"
named _Bathtub Blues_). It's a lullaby of desperation; if I had a
perfect memory I'd post the lyrics. Failing that, does anyone have
other thoughts on the subject of lullabies? Do they work? At what?
Are they for children or for parents?

I think there was a recurring bit along the lines of "You've done about as
much as a kid can do in one day, so you might as well (might as well ...)
go to sleep."

And when Jonathan was young if I played music (mandolin or dulcimer) he would
usually go to sleep. I think this stage lasted about a year; toward the end
he would start fussing if I got out the mandolin when he wasn't ready to
admit to being tired (but he still often went to sleep fairly soon if I
played).

(Ahem. If you want to draw conclusions about the nature of my musical
abilities, go ahead - but keep them to yourself, thank you.)

In case anyone checks this item out, there is a great new CD out titled
"The World Sings" of lullabys from around the world. Definately worth
looking into.

I'm sure the songs aren't by any big name groups (which makes it less
commercial which is cool) There are songs from everywhere... Also, along the
same line, but not lullabies per se, is the Wee Sing "Around the World" What's
particularly nice about that is it gives you the lyrics and score for each
song in both native language and English translation, plus blurbs about each
country and the country flags.

Lyrics and sheet music are a Good Thing!!!
I have a couple of tapes I made for Timothy off of my old LPs from childhood.
It really pleases me when he asks for one of those tapes or to have one of the
songs sung- let's hear it for cultural transmission... (although some of the
songs are VERY southern, sigh.)

That's wonderful! Strangely enough, one of Kaitlyn's favourite tapes to
listen to is by Owain Fyfe from Ren Fest. She loves the Renaissance music!
(That's my girl!) :)

if any of you are neopagans, and have access to the song "Circles", that
makes a great lullabye, too. If not, the song is to the tune of
Alan Bell's song "Windmills" - which would also make a great lullaby,
I would think - the tune's the important part.

My problem is that my son is really musical, and won't go to sleep if
there's music on (singing or a tape). sigh. Him, we put to bed with
a book.

my son always liked it when I sang to him (the usuals.. rockabye baby and
Twinkle, Thwinkle, Little Star) but my daughter alwasy thinks it's playtime
when I start to sing to her. So I guess it's pretty individual for each child.
