The kind that allow the baby "grow room" (like the Baby Bjorn brand) can
be used as long as the parent's back holds out and are a much better bet
than the kind intended to completely enclose a newborn. Unless the baby
is due mid-winter...in which case, I guess it's a harder call. Another
advantage of the open style is that they are *much* more comfortable in
the height of summer, when baby is no less likely to want to be held.

You will alreadyy have bought the gift in question, of course!
For general reference: something like a sling (that may be what mta was
talking about) is **MUCH** more comfortable for the carry-er, and easier
to get a baby into, and generally superior, in my experience. The Snugli
type keeps the baby in approximately one position (wiggling, perhaps, but
using one set of the carry=er's muscles) while the slings are much more
adaptable.
