You know, I bought a CD-ROM GAME based on the SPACE HULK chapter of
Warhammer. It doesn't work, though. I'll have to complain to
Electronic Arts.

I've found the liturature on titan leagons and it looks cool, but two GW games
is more than enough. I saw a little blurb in white dwarf about a WHFB computer
game. Didn't give much though.

Speaking of computer games, has anyone played Warcraft 2? My little group
of friends really liked the first one, and we'd like to know if the sequal is
as good....

What's Warhammer and what do you need to play. All these games here sound
great, but I don't know anything at all about them.

response 21 of 65: Mark Unseen   Oct 28 19:58 UTC 1995

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering, too! What exactly is Warhammer?
Book game? Card game? Computer game? What?

Warhammer is fantasy wargaming involving miniatures and tape measures,
and few other things I don't know about.

There are many forms of warhammer, varying mostly in their setting. One is
set in a pseudo-medieval world, several in the far future, one consists
entirely of sea battles, etc. They all have several things in common.

Basically, a game consists of moving miniatures (or scraps of paper for those
unable to afford miniatures) around according to set rules. There are also
rules governing miniatures trying to kill each other off by shooting them
or whopping them over the head with various weapons or blasting them with
psychic power.

Before the game begins, you must choose your army. First you choose a race to
play--humans, dwarves, high elves, wood elves, dark elves, chaos (the forces
of evil), undead, or skaven (half-rat/half-human). Each race has a list
of different troops that they have access to, the weapons you can give
those troops, the special rules governing those troops, and how many
points the troops cost. Both players, before choosing their army, must
agree on a certain number of points that their army will not exceed.
These points are used to "purchase" troops, weapons, magic items, etc.

The two versions of the game that eldrich and I play are WHFB (warhammer
fantasy battles) and 40K (warhammer 40,000). WHFB is set in a typical
fantasy world, with some unusual additions (such as the skaven). In WHFB,
hand-to-hand combat tends to be the most important, and troops fight in
large units of anywhere from 5 to 50 or more troops.
40K is set in a very interesting futuristic setting. There is more
emphasis on shooting, and a much wider choice of weapons and armor. There
are also special rules dealing with tanks, giant robots called dreadnoughts,
and bunkers.
Personally, I find 40K to be the more enjoyable of the two. Although the
rules are more complex, and games tend to take longer, it is (IMHO) the
better-made of the two games, and the setting is *very* well done.
I would recommend WHFB, however, for those who are new to wargaming.

40k is very hard to learn unless you have a very patent person to exsplain it
to you and answer the million of question that are sure to come. WHFB is much
easier, less table and shooting, much less looking stuff up and lots of easy to

think shamu plays too.
