I just e-mailed this question to the Statler Brothers, whose site promises
the possibility of an answer in "regular mail", but maybe someone else already
has the answer. So here goes.
I recently purchased a Johnny Horton re-release CD ("16 Hits" or some such
title), which includes "Jim Bridger". I _think_ I hear Harold Reid's bass
in the backup vocals, but the credits aren't that detailed. The song was
originally releaed in 1960, four years before the Statler Brothers formed,
so it seems possible Mr. Reid was otherwise employed. Does anyone have more
(or even any ;) information about that song?

Probably there's a better place for this, but anyway..
Thanks to a decision to stop selling them, Target stores have been
closing out their inventory of Apple's 10GB iPods at clearance prices.
I recently snagged two of them, one for a friend and one to replace my
my original 5GB model. That means, however, that I need to find a
buyer for the 5GB unit. If anyone's interested in making an offer
before I put it on eBay, let me know. Apart from a few minor scuffs
on the surface (which can be mostly taken out with Brasso, I've polished
out scuffs before..) it's in excellent shape and has been my favorite
gadget for over a year now. Originally a Mac unit, it has been converted
for use with PCs and updated to the latest available PC firmware version.
For those who are curious about the Target closeout, apparently the stores
were supposed to send them back to HQ but a substantial fraction of stores
didn't get around to doing that and so are closing out their remaining
stocks for $199, if you can find a store that's still selling them..
Boxes may be marked higher (the ones I found were priced at $279 but they
scanned at $199.) List price on the 10GB was $399 before last week,
but Apple's new 10GB model replaces its old 5GB model. The new 10GB
lists for $299, though it lacks several accessories that come with this
package (namely the headphone remote and carrying case.) I'll frankly
recommend that if you can find this deal it's probably going to be more
attractive than buying my used iPod, but since most of the Target closeouts
are gone already these might not be so easy to score.

While cleaning out old e-mail, I came across an item from October 2003, where
the sender had invented some software where:
"...you just open an MP3 (or a music CD on Windows
XP/2000/NT) of music you'd like to translate, and watch it pick out the
notes for you. It's a great tool for getting a rough draft of sheet music,
or to find out what chords are being played in your favorite music."
The site listed in the e-mail is long gone. Has anyeone heard about any
software that will do something like this, in any reasonable fashion?
