Rock in the 21st Century

To my surprise I seem to have bought a current hit rock album.
At Borders on Sunday I was somewhat amused by the album playing
on the house stereo, so we bought it. The band was Incubus and
the title was MORNING VIEW; sounded a lot like late 1980s indie-rock
maybe? I think I gave it some bonus points on the buy-o-meter
because Scott Litt produced it; he produced some of the mid-period
REM albums that I liked. Lots of cool guitar sounds.
Today I read in USA Today that the new Incubus album is supposed to be
one of the monster sellers which will help save the music industry;
it's expected to sell a couple of hundred thousand copies in its
first week.
I'm surprised; the only other rock band since 1990s which has caught
my attention at all has been Blur. I'd never heard of the band
before. I'd attempt a review, but Leslie swiped the CD to play
in the car on her drive to New York; she's *very* enthusiastic
about it.

Oh no! Maybe it's not too late to return it and salvage some
of your indie cred.. :-p (On second thought, Ken's probably
more than safe on that count..)
I'm actually sort of curious just what qualifies as plain old
"rock" these days, as opposed to being pigeonholed in some sub-category.
Also not sure by what sound you refer to when you describe it as
sounding like "late 80s indie", though I can probably extrapolate
somewhat from the Scott Litt connection..

Hmmm.. since the only band named "Incubus" that I'd heard of previously
was from Brazil, I decided to look this one up in the All Music Guide
(once again: http://www.allmusic.com - HIGHLY recommended..)
My initial guess about what they sound like, based on Ken's description,
is probably way off base judging from the album credits (which include
six violin players, two violists (?), and a credit for woodwinds..)

I think the music journalism term for them would be "Nu-metal." Then again,
I've never heard that word anyplace outside the music press, and even they
seem to be giving up on it. Ideally, there should be an umlaut over the 'u.'
No, I don't get it either.
Whatever you call it, interesting things are going on over there. A few of
the bands seem to be creeping into prog/indie territory. Incubus, Staind,
Tool, and A Perfect Circle all come to mind.
Better yet, don't listen to me. I don't know what I'm talking about. I think
brighn or senna might have something intelligent to say here.

I *almost* bought the Incubus disc this weekend. I'll have to get Gareth to
pick me one up for Xmas.
