Favorite Albums and Songs of 2004
|
Dec 29 04:28 UTC 2004 |
OK, music fans! It's time to get those "best of 2004" lists turned in!
By my rules, it's a 2004 album if you acquired it in 2004, but feel
free to acquire your own rules.
Please try to say something about each entry so this doesn't become
just a dry list of titles. Music tastes are so fragmented these days
that few readers are likely to know much about any one person's
favorites.
Previous years' lists can be found in the Music and Music2 conferences.
((( Linked between Agora and Music conferences. )))

(This is an early draft; there may be a later revision.)
Kadril & Alumea, LA PALOMA NEGRA
Kadril is a group of Belgian folk instrumentalists; Alumea is a group
of Spanish women singers from the pandeteira tradition, plus a
bagpiper. A great mix of sounds sustained over both CDs of this set.
La Piva Dal Carner, M'HAN PRESA
Hurdy gurdy, bagpipes, and other reedy instruments from northern
Italy, with some singing.
Tinariwen, AMASSAKOUL
Wonderful electric guitar sketching links between blues and
the Malian desert.
Patti Smith, TRAMPIN'
Echoes of her first two albums, all the way down to one long-winded
track amidst the concise rock gems.
Anna Massie, GLAD COMPANY
Young Scottish woman wizard guitarist with two friends on backup
instruments; two well-chosen American songs.

[Big big hot jazz to Brazilian]
Morrissey - You Are the Quarry
[I thnik this is a great album Morrissey had never made]
Patti Smith - Trampin'
[Well, Patti Smith is - as you say - amusing & genial ]
Wayne Shorter - Alegria
[Unbelieveble. This musician is still great. By th e way,

I really like the new U2 album, "How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb" For
a band that is in its 25th year, they have kept up a strong level of
artistry. Many bands who have been around even half as long go into
permanent decline. These guys are still relevant, still (in many
observers' view) the best band in the world, at least major studio
band.
U2 goes into the the rock and roll hall of fame this year. When they
accept, Bono needs to say "this is fucking brilliant" again. He did
that when they got an award a couple years ago and got the network
fined for indecency. When they asked Bono what he thought of the
network getting fined over his comments, he said "thats fucking
brilliant!" The FCC later threw out the fine. They like U2 too :)

The new Duran Duran is grating my nerves. I did NOT need to see them
performing live on "Vegas" last night while James Caan got his old man butt
kicked.

Re. #5: I don't mean to go off-topic, but I thought you'd find this a bit
funny: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst .

"Into Your Heart" by Hothouse Flowers. "The Diary of Alicia Keys" by Alicia
Keys. "Elephant" by Black Eyed Peas (though that might be old). "Obrigado"
