Butterflies!
|
Mar 26 19:38 UTC 2000 |
I am mad about butterflies (insects in general actually).. I rared about
80 species of butterflies in India. Does anybody do something like this?
I also love photographing them (nature in general actually). I guess,
with the coming of spring (I am totally amazed by this transformation!),
I guess, I will get a chance to rare some of the Michigan butterflies..
What are the common butterflies over here? I remember seeing just a few
since I arrived in late August last year. Any experiences regarding
this?

Depends on where you are. In most urban and suburban
areas, the European Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) is
the commonest butterfly. Swallowtails are also very
common. Late June/early July is when you will see
swarms of every kind of butterfly under the sun.
Pierids, lycaenids, papilionids, satyrids, nymphalids,
hesperiids and of course danaids. We also have a
booming population of moths. Noctuids are especially
rich in my neighborhood. Gaudy catocalas stray into
our house on summer evenings.
There are many good guide for beginners and newcomers.
Stick with the ones that say they cover the eastern
U.S.
