Morel mushrooms are out! Mark Unseen   May 11 23:47 UTC 1996

What a bonanza! Today I found a bunch of Morel mushrooms in my yard.

I am not a mushroom hunter, but always make an exception for Morels.

I'm not a mushroom hunter either but enjoy eating mushrooms.

Do morel-hunters have to be careful about poisonous lookalikes?

I am told by the big-game mushroom hunters, that there is a false morel which
appears similar to the morel. The difference is that the morel's sponge-like
form is just a bulb off of the stem, while the false morel actually has an
"umbrella" which has a spongy surface and the bottom of it is not attached
to the stem. Stay away from those (I have never seen the false morel).

We had the morel's last night and they were really tasty.

It's pretty easy to distinguish the false from the real once you've looked
at a mushroom book. My parents use to get them in their yard and some
friends were getting them in theirs. The friends were throwing them away
till I found out and told them what they were! We were given several at
first but after them tasted them, they stopped supplying us :(

Did you know that you need to cut the mushroom off the stem so that you will
have them in following years?

No & thanks. How much of the stem has to be left?

According to my brother, he says you should leave about 1/2 inch of stem
showing above the ground. Don't know why though.

The general rule is to "pinch" and not to "pull".
