Purple finches Mark Unseen   Apr 16 16:06 UTC 1995

Neat item: We have a dried grass wreath right next to our front door. It's
in a protected alcove. A pair of purple finches took up residence in this
wreath and now we have to use the back door. The 4 eggs are sky blue and
about the size of kidney bean. They are a little more pointed than most eggs.

Neat. We hang pots of ferns on the front porch each spring and have
had similar experiences -- a pair of birds will usually nest in one of
them. Not purple finches though -- I forget what they were.

The purple finch male looks sparrow-like from the back. His breast is red and
if he lifts his wings, you see red (not purple). The female is brownish
and could easily be mistaken for a sparrow.
