Music Books II Mark Unseen   Feb 6 02:24 UTC 1999

Donated by Tim Ryan (tpryan):

1. I Make My Own Rules
by L.L. Cool J with Karen Hunter
1998, 234 pages, retail price $5.99
Memoir from the grammy-winning rapper. Includes 16 pages of B&W photos.

Minimum bid: $1.00

2. Willie Nelson Sings America
by Steven Opdyke
1998, 472 pages, retail price $24.95
This seems to be less a biography than an incredibly detailed discography.
Each chapter is about an album or set of albums, but there's lots and lots of
information here about what was going on when the album was recorded, who the
collaborators were and what their background is, etc. There's also
information about Willie's appearances on film, and an extensive bibliography.

Minimum bid: $2.50

3. Nanci Griffith's Other Voices: a Personal History of Folk Music
by Nanci Griffith & Joe Jackson
1998, 272 pages, retail price $19.95
This book is a companion to Nanci's two albums "Other Voices, Other Rooms"
(1993) and "Other Voices Too: A Trip Back To Bountiful" (1998). It contains
a lot of discussion of Nanci's influences, her feelings about the place of
folk music in the world today, and details about all the tracks on both
albums. There are also interviews with Pete Seeger and many of the other
writers and performers who appeared on the albums (over 70 guest stars, as I
recall.)

Minimum bid: $2.00

Hmmmmmmmm. Should I push forward to victory or should I let
otaking have this copy and go buy myself a new one at Borders?

So I posed this moral dilemma to my carpooler this morning: march forward
to victory, or retire gracefully? His answer: "Grex needs the money."

 :)

(incidentally, otaking, have I missed your presence in the
Grex music conference? There's a number of folk-ish items there, and
if you're this interested in the Nanci Griffith book you might
enjoy them.)
