1. Tunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting
by Jimmy Webb
1998, 432 pages (hardcover), retail price $24.95
This is a book about how songs are written. Includes tons of examples and
diagrams with circles and arrows and a paragraph explaining what each one is
about. This looks like a really neat book. Jimmy Webb wrote "By the Time I
Get to Phoenix" for Glen Campbell, "Up, Up and Away" for the 5th Dimension,
and "MacArthur Park" for Richard Harris, among a long list of others. There
are quotes of praise on the back from Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Linda
Ronstadt, Sammy Cahn, and Judy Collins.

2. Somebody to Love? (A Rock-and-Roll Memoir)
by Grace Slick with Andrea Cagan
1998, 370 pages (hardcover), retail price $25.00
A Memoir of the lead singer for Jefferson Airplane which talks about San
Francisco counterculture during and after the Summer of Love, and about her
experiences doing drugs and touring the world.

3. Singing Lessons
by Judy Collins
1998, 346 pages (hardcover), retail price $25.00
A more introspective memoir than Grace Slick's, I think. It seems to center
around the death of Judy's son in 1992, and how she has dealt with it and come
out stronger. There's a nice quote from Bill Moyers on the back: "This is a
beautifully told story of loss, grief, and healing, of the unbearable made
bearable by love. Of Judy's many gifts to us through the years, none has come
so beautifully ribboned with grace." The book includes a 4-song CD.

some of the postings in the poetry cf to music, and I really need to
start some sort of songwriting.
(If I'm not lucky, then maybe I'll pick up that fingerpicking book and
