My Brief Affair With Livingston Taylor
|

Last night I rounded up a couple people to go to the Ark with me to see
Livingston Taylor. We had front row seats at stage left, which is where I
usually sit at the Ark.
During the first song, Stephen Bishop's "On and On," Livingston asked the
audience to sing the higher notes on "on and on" lines, since he "doesn't
do that." So, I and maybe 3 other people did so, me singing just a tad
more confidently than the others. Livingston stopped dead in the middle
of his song, and asked who he had just heard singing, and 3 fingers pointed
at me. Then he asked me, "Do you, um, sing, I mean, do you sing, normally?",
and I answered, "I sing as normally as I can." The audience laughed, and
Livingston said, "Hey, never kid a kidder," and asked my name, which I told
him. For the remaining 2 hours of concert, 5 out of 6 songs were sung
in my direction, as he was trying to find something I knew and could sing
with him. He even sung right into my eyes, "People Will Think We're In Love."
Mr. Taylor talked to me all through the concert, and I ended up singing two
songs with him, with him on the verses and I on the choruses.
I have to say that this was the most enjoyable evening I have ever spent at
the Ark, and I'm going to learn all the songs on his albums before he comes
back again!
