I assume you are referring primarily to classical music? The NYT had a
piece some time ago on the severe decline in the classical music magazine
market over the last few years. Even the NYT has cut back space
considerably, they said. MUSICAL AMERICA is gone. HIGH FIDELITY, which
used to carry a good deal of classical coverage along with equipment
reviews, is gone. I'm not sure what's still out there.
There are a great many opera publications. About the only one we still
read consistently is OPERA NEWS, which is very good, although it is
focussed tightly on New York's Metropolitan Opera. OPERA MONTHLY is
oddly amateurish and after about two years we dropped it. OPERA from
the UK is nice. OPERA NOW, another UK magazine, used to be good, but
about a year ago it changed owners; there are more pretty color pictures
and very little worthwhile text. OPERA QUARTERLY is now an academic
publication which appears very irregularly.
In folk & folkish music: FOLK ROOTS is my bible, the best coverage of
UK folk & folk-pop & world music available. ROCK & REEL is a heck of a
lot of fun; it's edited by a young guy who's enthusiasm comes through
on every page, the writing is sometimes only marginally literate.
For information on obscure folk-rock bands nothing else will touch it,
though. DIRTY LINEN tries to be the US version of FOLK ROOTS, mostly,
but their critical senses are not too developed, they are fans of
everything.
