BEST BUYS is also a record store
|
Aug 28 03:56 UTC 1993 |
Went to the opening of BEST BUYS today. The Ann Arbor store. Surpirsed
to find it is also a music store. A much larger selection of CDs and
tapes than Target or Kmart, but not as extensive as Schoolkids. prices
look to be rather reasonalbe. A large number of Columbia/Epic "Nice
price" CDs were selling at $5.99, including Simon & Garfunkels "Bridge
over Troubled Water". Common price seems to be $12.99-$13.99. Some
new HOt titles (U2 Zoomba?) at 9.99. CDs are not in those paperboard
boxes, but are plastic wrapped, saves on display space!
My new purchases included Billy Joel-River of Dreams, Best of
Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana-Abraxas, The Association-Great hits,
Universe sampler 92, and the Wacky World of Spike Jones.

Long boxes are indeed on their way out. Both Schoolkids and Discount
records are either displaying the jewel cases sans box or removing
a reusable long box at the cash register. Bout time. I suspect
SKR Classical will soon follow suit.

Re 1,3. I followed the longbox controversy with great interest last year.
It is indeed astonishing that common sense finally prevailed, against all
odds. (Perhaps the whole battle should be chronicled in another item.)
Janice went to Best Buys today and bought several CD's.

Best Buys (where Highland was last seen) may have the purchasing power
to direct that all CDs will be delivered without the longbox. Though
they may remove any they need to themslefs and then wrap them again
in heat sealing shrink wrap. One thing for sure, the stroe sure can
display many more without the longobx getting in the way.

Please, let's discuss the longbox in a separate item. (I tried to enter
such an item last night, but it was aborted by *one* wrong keystroke!)
In short, *all* CD marketing will be shedding the longbox. Best Buys
is not at all unique.

Information on changes in CD packaging can be found in new item 79, and
old item 10.

Well, if you and Janice were at Best Buys on Sunday then you must
have seen the mess it was trying to get in and out of that shopping
center. Yech. I was at Office Max with my son getting school supplies
and it looked like the rest of the town had the same plan.
Is Best Buys about the same as Highland Appliance in terms of
pricing? Did they try to sell you a service contract on your CDs?
