Can anyone suggest a good Procol Harum anthology?

Can anyone compare the two new 2-CD Yardbirds anthologies to the Rhino
"Greatest Hits" collection from a while ago? Also, does anyone know of
a local source for the Yardbirds' CD "Roger the Engineer"? I foolishly
failed to grab one of the copies at the DC Tower. This album has
the song "Over Under Sideways Down", and it's a UK import; the only
domestic release to contain that song is the new Jeff Beck 3-CD box.

I could have sworn I saw a disc at the Ann Arbor Tower that had
"Over Under Sideways Down" on it (I was looking for that song in particular.)
I'm sure it wasn't a copy of "Roger the Engineer", though, since I probably
would have bought that. Maybe it was some import collection..

I picked up a CD single at Tower last Thursday with "Over Under
Sideways Down" on it. It was $3.99 and I believe I found it in
the import mystery bin..

Since this is the quick queries item..

Does anyone know anything about the following upcoming releases:

Sep 22 Peter Gabriel "Us"

Will this be a whole new Peter Gabriel album? Pop or soundtrack?

Oct 6?         R.E.M.                       {title unknown..}

Seems *way* too early for R.E.M. to have another album coming out.
Will this be a collection (if so, probably a ridiculously expensive
box set with 2 or 3 extra tracks to snag those with collector's
disease..), a single, a live album, or what?

Does anyone know whether the Brian Eno song that's on the "Cool
World" soundtrack will be included on his soon-to-be-released (Sep 1)
album "Nerve Net".. Has anyone heard "My Squelchy Life" (original
title for "Nerve Net" until, for whatever reason, they seemingly
decided to re-record it and release it with a different name..)?
If so, after "Nerve Net" comes out will you tell me which you like
better?

When is the *$#()!! Talking Heads anthology due out? Has it been
pushed back yet again??

Also, how's the soundtrack to the new Twin Peaks movie? Anyone
know whether Julie Cruise will have another album out soon?

Answers to Mike's queries, mostly from Usenet buzz or from ICE:
1) The Gabriel album is described as 3-4 pop songs in the style of SO,
mixed with a lot more material in the world-music style of the PASSION
album. It is not a soundtrack to a film, however.

2) The R.E.M. album is reported to be another studio album. The title
hasn't been announced. It's been a year since OUT OF TIME; before
they signed with Warner, 1 album/year was R.E.M.'s usual rate.
I bet R.E.M.'s decision not to tour the OUT OF TIME stuff helped
the new album come out a lot faster. I am under the impression that
R.E.M. is thoroughly burned out by the road.

In the expensive R.E.M. collectible market, EMI England has issued
new editions of the early albums under the series title "The IRS Years".
Each studio album is padded out with 4-5 extra goodies.
Schoolkids has had some of these at an obscene price; I bought the
RECKONING reissue today to get their version of "Tighten Up" by
    Archie Bell & The Drells.

3) Everything I've heard indicates that the Talking Heads anthology is
    still set for Tuesday release.

Another R.E.M. question.. Is their cover of "First We Take Manhattan"
on anything other than the "I'm Your Fan" tribute/compilation?

New info from the REM mailing list - the new album's title will be
"Automatic for the People".

Hmmm.. Even more cryptic than usual.. I really liked "Out of Time"
(it got me to start buying their albums again; I quit after "Document")
and hope that this one will be comparable..

So the Talking Heads anthology should be out now as I type?
If it were a little earlier I'd go to Tower and check to see if it
came in (they've been doing a sort-of-neat thing this summer..
Monday nights they stay open an extra hour (until 1:00 AM Tuesday
so they can start selling the new releases after midnight.
So far this summer there hasn't been anything I was in a real
rush to buy, but I'll probably high-tail it down there next week
for the Eno release..)

Ooops. I checked around today and suddenly all signs of the appearance
of the Talking Heads anthology have vanished: it's gone, completely,
from the weekly Usenet new-release list, and Where House East Lansing
claims to know nothing about it. *sigh*. Oh well, it wasn't going
to have the autoharp & string quartet version of "Psycho Killer" anyway.

Well, I suppose I'm disappointed, but hardly surprised..

I'm trying to think of a CD I heard on WUOM about 5 years ago. It
was something like the "solar choir"; it was a style of singing that
created incredible harmonics, to the extent that it was hard to believe
you were listening to human voices, and not computers. Does anyone know
what I'm trying to talk about?

The only thing that reminds me of is Tibetan monks
chants, where the base note doesn't
change, but the harmonics do in eerie patterns.
YOu can do this yourself. First, form
the sound 'ooooooooo' with your mouth. Sing
a note softly with this sound, then gradually
change the configuration of your mouth to
make the sound 'eeeeee'. As you make
the change, you should be able to hear the harmonic series
starting at its low end on 'oooooo' and
going up the progression as you approach 'eeeee'.

You've got the right idea. Glenda pointed out that I heard this
again recently, on _Schickly Mix_ (sp?). So now I have a pointer.

Response to one a while back about REM

How can anybody say that "Out of Time" was a good album? That was teribble!!!
Bringing in these stupid guest rappers and singers was totally dumb! Even
Green was better than that. Personally, I like "Fables of the Reconstruction"
the best. *That* was a good album. If you want to hear REM, listen to their
first Ep, Chronic Town. It's hardly the same group as "Out of Time".
As for "Automatic for the People" I think it was an improvement over
Out of time, but still lacked the whole feeling that I ever started listening
to REM in the first place for. Michael Stipe has once again tried to make
himself into some sort of spokesperson for every cause he can think of, and
is totally defying everything that he said a few years back. The main problem
with REM is that all the members are getting too old.

How does one pronounce the Smetana quartet? SMET-ana, or sme-TANA?
mcnally
response 15 of 20: Mark Unseen   Dec 22 20:56 UTC 1992

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I guess.. I can't stand
"Green", but I *do* like "Out of Time" (at least I like about half of it,
but well enough to balance out the rest of the album..) Though I like
R.E.M.'s earlier stuff ("Murmur" is probably my favorite of their albums)
I don't expect them to go on making Murmur-like albums forever, nor would
I like it if they did. I don't listen to R.E.M. because they're hip
or cool or (used to) fit nicely into the college/alternative radio format.
I listen to them because I like good guitar-based pop and some of the
songs on "Out of Time" are just that.. "Document" and "Green" are much
more plagued by the we-take-ourselves-too-seriously syndrome.

[btw, I *like* the guest rap from KRS-1 on "Radio Song" and I like the
Kate Pierson vocals on "Me In Honey" (though I'd like to bury "Shiny
Happy People" in a very deep pit.)]

     Re 14: I think it's pronounced <smehtna> as near as I can
transliterate Slavic phonyms into English.

OK, thanks Chris. That was my mothers guess, too.

  Love their music.

re #16: Not particularly, though it has grown on me some since I
first listened to it.

The Talking Heads anthology I *believe* was called "Sand In The Vaseline"
and released as a double-album. There was a previously unreleased track
on the album called "Lifetime Piling Up" that was in heavy rotation on
89X for a while. As soon as I can find the money, I'd get both that and
the Simple Minds anthology.
