Summer Mood Music
|
Jul 10 17:01 UTC 1996 |
This item was lively in the spring Agora, so I thought we should give
it a second run. It will also be linked as Music #193.
Last week was a four-concert week for us. In Philadelphia we attended
a house concert by Charlie Zahm, a Canadian folksinger very much in the
style of the late Stan Rogers. Back in Ann Arbor, Scottish folksinger
Dick Gaughan was at the Ark; he's my absolute favorite guy-with-a-guitar.
Friday night, Maynard Ferguson and his medium-big band were at the
Power Center. Arabella is a very enthusiastic fan of the big band
sound. How many big bands are left?
Finally, on Saturday, there was the RFD Boys at Top of the Park.
Down in front, a friend described the scene as "a mosh pit for kids."
Not a rock concert in the bunch. I *am* getting old.
And you?

Well, tonight is the Women of Note concert, at the West Park
bandshell, at 8:00 p.m. It's part of the Ann Arbor Civic
Band's summer series. I plan to walk on over.
This is a great town if you like music. Something happening
almost every night. A lot of it for free.

I caught Frank Allison and the Odd Sox at TOP. He was kinda weird, but
apparently he's got some groupies. During the song about Frank's car,
a bunch of dancers who were apparently very familiar with the song
were making gestures in concert with the music.

This morning there will be a classical music duo performing
on Zingerman's patio, 9:00 until 11:00. I plan to be there
for a capp, some raisin pecan toast, and hopefully a little
Bach.

I'm performing in a concert this Wednesday at seven oclock at Franklin High
School in Livonia. Just another high school band that's toured Europe. If
you can find Wonderland Mall, you can find Franklin High School. And, yes,
chelsea, it is free.

Frank is cool, a local icon along with Madcat and Joel. And by the way, I
was in the band at Franklin High School a long long time ago in a galaxy far,
far away.

A couple of topics to toss out.
Richard Thompson is scheduled to play at the Michigan Theatre in
November; tickets should be on sale around the end of September.
(The new Norma Waterson CD is a much better Richard Thompson
album than the new Richard Thompson album is. )
Entertainment Weekly reports that Warner Bros. Records has re-signed
R.E.M. to a five-album deal for $80 million. This is the new record
for a musical signing.

I hear Kiss is playing the Palace soon. I also hear that the Who will be
here as well.
