Compilation tapes Mark Unseen   Jul 4 04:13 UTC 1996

This is the item to talk about compilation tapes you have given or
recieved. There is an art to making a good compilation tape, the art of
creating subtle seques to change modes, and to have variety and unity
within the tape. I just made a tape for friend that has Fairport
Convention, Sonic Youth, John Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius, and David Grisman
together yet it maintains a pretty consistant mood.

Please talk about really good tapes you have given or recieved, what they
mean to you, etc.

re #1 The music industry has conceded that taping will happen, and
even tax the tape industry to make up for the losses incured in home taping.
Now back to your compilation tape item.

*Did* the tape tax go into effect? I don't recall that.

I would imagine copying a tape for personal use falls within the usual
copyright guidelines, but unless some special provision has been adopted,
copying to give (or sell) to others would seem to be a violation. It
isn't *your* music - you've only bought a license to play it (and only
for personal enjoyment).

Last I heard it was OK to tape a record or CD to play in your car.
There's no rule governing picking and choosing and mixing and matching.
Now if you tape it off the radio that is technically illegal, but a lot of
people do it, I believe.

If people want to start the music the music copyright violation
item, please do, in the meanwhile (clears throat) back to the compilation
tape item.

Actually, I had no idea that raven was into Fairport... which generation?

The only tape I mixed lately alternated a number of folk-rock items
such as Steeleye Span and The Woods Band with classic rock tracks
like the Yardbirds.

Does this item include where you go into a store and make your own tape
(which you'll have to pay for :-) by selecting songs from all the available
albums? Has anyone ever done that?

Just got the Fairport a week ago upon hearing it at Border's, I have
to admit that it's the first Richard Thompson and friends release that I
really like, though I think it's Sand Denny's vocals, and Dave Swarbrick's
violin that realy impress me so far. The CD is Liege and Lief BTW.

re#9 Sure anyway of making a compilation tape is in the bounds of this
item as far as I'm concerned. I've never made a mix tape in a store but
it could be really fun in a well stocked record store if you had access to
everything in the store and not just a couple of top 40 CDS

I should probably start another item for babbling to raven about
Sandy Denny and Fairport.
