Both kinds of music: Country AND Western Mark Unseen   Feb 20 03:44 UTC 1995

There was some demand for a country music item, so: here it is!

Q. What happens when you play a C&W song backwards?

A. You sober up, your wife comes back, you get your job back...

Country has been in the background all my life; my father is quite a
fan, and many of the family car trips were accompanied by the soundtrack
of the local AM country station. I had lots of Chet Atkins records as a
kid, and I picked up on Emmylou Harris with her first album.

For the most part this all went in a box in the closet when I
went to college. However, eventually British Isles folk led to
American folk, which isn't too different from country except that
the folk audience tends to vote liberal. Lately I've been listening
when I can to WDBM's "Progressive Torch & Twang" on Tuesday nights,
and I've been getting interested in some of the places where
country crosses over with "alternative" rock. I've gotten quite
fond of the Bottle Rockets, and I'm trying to run down a CD anthology
which has some singles by Courtney and Western.

I've also been developing a bit of interest in bluegrass.

"PT &T" is my all-time fave radio show. I even schedule my client appts
in Lansing for Tuesdays so i can listen in the car.

re #1 if you are interesed in progressive blue grass you might
want to check out the bad Livers from Austin Texas. They play old
style bluegrass with ineresting lyrics. Their latest release is
"Horses in the mines."

Is there a difference between country and western?

Yes, there is a difference between "country" and "western", though
at 2 am I'm a little hard pressed to articulate it.
Perhaps "country" has more to do with the Appalachians and the
American South; "western" is a largely archaic form now, except for
revivalists like Mary McCaslin and Asleep at the Wheel, but it was
a popular genre when my dad was young. I bought him a Rhino anthology
of Western songs for Christmas, and he could sing along with
almost every track. For "western", think about all those singing
cowboys.

What's good by Chet Atkins? If I wanted to buy a couple of his
tapes, what would be good to start out with?

for the modern stuff, "Neck and Neck" by Chet Atkins and
Mark Knopfler is pretty good. I have a few of his older ones,
but I tend to like the newer stuff.

The general rule of thumb with Chet Atkins is to stick with his
duet albums.  I have a pretty good LP he did with Les Paul;
I have no idea if it's in print. I thought NECK & NECK was pretty
good.

Country is kind of a family thing with me, too. Its really something that
both you and your parents can listen to. Its a way to connect when you really
don't see anything else the same way, but you both think that new Brooks and
Dunn song is pretty cool.

Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and Bill Monroe's Smokey
Mountain bluegrass are two different styles that got play on the
same radio stations.

While Country music had been good recently, it is also
getting sterile. Less fun. Less likelyhood of hearing something
on the order of "May the bird of Paradise fly up your nose" these
day. I can recall only one *fun* country song in recent years...
the one about Cleopatra, the Queen of Denial.

For fun western music there's Riders in the Sky. A real hoot.

But Riders in the Sky don't get Top Twelve play on "Young
Country" type stations.
