Philadelphia Folk Festival

We had an impromptu convocation of the Grex music conference out in
Schwenksville PA last weekend, so I thought I'd start an item for
folks to enter reviews, thoughts, anecdotes, memories, that sort of
thing...

My two discoveries from the Festival were Stephen Wade and Eileen McGann.
In both cases, I was helping out with Leslie's mom's craft booth, and
my attention was grabbed by the music floating up over the hill.
(Mary Ellen, I believe you were down in the seats for Stephen Wade's
set; can you tell me a little about it?)
Friday night's performance by Mike Cross was very good; I was by the
recordings booth afterwards and you should have seen the Mike Cross
tapes and CDs flying out of there. But that was no surprise, Mike Cross
is always very good; he's a spectacular instrumentalist with a good
sense of humor who really knows how to engage the audience.

Is Wade a banjo player/story teller? If so, I saw him in Washington
a year and a half ago.

Yes, he's had two long-running shows, "Banjo Dancing" and "All The Way
Home"; the music from those two was extracted into a CD I found.
Tell us about the show, Mike...

The one I saw was "All the Way Home" (though I had remembered it as "On the
Way Home") I saw it in a medium-sized club in D.C. during spring break year
before last.
It mostly consisted of his storytelling, punctuated with banjo picking.
Several stories were personal anecdotes, others were traditional, and a few
others dealt with the history of banjos or of the particular banjos he was
playing (of which there were quite a few, some of them beautiful antiques..)
I don't remember too much about it except that I recall being slightly
disappointed that he didn't play more music. His stories were relatively
good but I'd been hoping for more music.

If I saw Stephen Wade I must confess that I don't remember it. I did
hear lots of great music thouhg. wow. Almost an overdose.
I was pleasantly surprised by David Bromberg. I had seen him before
and not really been all that impressed. This time I really loved his
set though. Laurie Lewis and Grant Street was almost enough to turn me
into a Blue Grass fan. :-) I really enjoyed Richie Havens concert. All
I had seen before was the infamous Woodstock recording. He was quite good
and he mananged to somehow get a lot of love out into the audience without
being corny. Mike Cross did indeed blow me away. I first suspected
something was up when a deadhead looking guy said to me " Yeah man- You don't
wanna miss Mike Cross! He's great!" Hmmm I said looking at the picture of
a guy in overalls... WOW. I still can't quite believe that one guy can
sound like that. He certainly does know how to work an audience.
It was fun seeing the Battlefield Band and their 18 (I swear he looks 16) year
old fiddler. There was so much good music I
will let someone else comment and then add more thoughts as they come.

The Philadelphia Folk Festival is coming up again fairly soon.
This year's dates are August 28, 29, and 30. I recently received
a flyer from the Festival, so if I can remember to bring it upstairs
later, I'll post some anticipated performers and a number you can
call if you want to order tickets or get further information.

While walking around in San Francisco last week, I ran into some
members of a band who will be performing at the Philadelphia Folk
Festival next week. They were playing on the street and caught my
attention, the stuff they were playing was pretty neat. If you go
to the Festival this year, let me know what you think of Sukay.
(they should be relatively easy to pick out.. even a huge folk
festival isn't going to flooded with Bolivian folk bands..)
They seemed like really nice people, and so far I've been enjoying
the album I bought from them..

(Dave Dixon used to play them with some regularity on WDET. Which brings
to mind, does anyone know what happened to him?)

I've heard of Sukay before, although I can't remember what they
sound like (although South American would be a good start). I
will try to catch them in one of their Philly Festival appearances.

Sukay is wonderful. They've played at Ten Pound Fiddle in East Lansing.
I have one of their albums.
