Our daughter (11) would like to go to the Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp
Junior Camp Program (Camp Birnstein) this summer. She plays the
flute. *She* would like to know if the food is good (!), but we would
like to hear of the experiences and opinions of either parents whose
children have gone to Birnstein, or performers that have gone in
the past. She has been offered a scholarship "valued at $150". She
started the flute in the bigging of 5th grade, and is now finishing 6th.

My brother has gone there for a couple of years. He has unfortunately
disappeared into the neighborhood for a couple of hours, so I can't get
anything out of him, but he seems to have really enjoyed himself there, and
has been going back every year.... music camp food isn't great, but it has
to be better than Interlochen! ;) It's apparently a really beautiful place,
and last time my brother went he changed his private teacher to the one he
had there (he plays French Horn). So I think it's a pretty good program.
Ah, my brother just reappeared. He thinks the program is good. Don't tell
your daughter, but when I asked about the food, he looked stricken and said
"It's the *worst* I've *ever* had..." ;) Ah well. He says that Interlochen is
thought of as a "higher" camp, but I didn't like the orchestra program when
I was there. I don't know about band.
Well, if you want more specific info, I can ask him your questions....
but that's as far as I know right now. I think Blue Lake is a lot less
stressful than Interlochen, and the food can *not* be worse than Interlochen.;)
But it might be a good experience for a first music camp, 'cept for the food..

I've had many friends that had gone to Blue Lake and Interlochen back when I
was in high school (not that long ago, really). Blue Lake definately has more
of a "camp" atmosphere to it, where, because Interlochen _is_ a school, it
tends to be more stringent. Interlochen people tend to become highly clickish,
from what I've experienced personally. For a camp, Blue Lake is very respected

I was offered a scholarship to Blue Lake when I was in 9th grade or so. This
greatly surprised me, as by that time I was not very good at the violin any
more. I had gone from 1st chair to second-from last over a couple of years.
I still don't know what they were thinking.

Thank you all for responding! I let Vittoria read this herself - no sense
not letting V know that your brother didn't like Blue Lake food, yagi -
forewarned is forearmed. She didn't have any immediate questions, but
some may arise.

Vittoria is now at Blue Lake. It is quite exotic, hearing small groups
throughout the woods, practicing on their instruments. We look forward
to what effect it might have on Vittoria's future with the flute. She
has never before played 3 to 4 hours a day, and that's what is scheduled
for the next dozen days.

Vittoria is back from Blue Lake. She liked it, and wants to start private
lessons. This was the last session, so we stayed for most of the
performances. From camp Bernstein, the band has it together better than
the orchestra (strings - except for the cellos, which were very good). One
of the Main Camp orchestras did the "finales" (last movements) of the 3
Bs: Brandenburg #5 (a bit mushy, but the orchestra was too large for it);
Beethoven's 5th (pretty good); and Brahms' 1st (strings got all messed up
in one section). But these are youngsters, who had all of 12 days to learn
these selections and practice together. This is an experience that only
music camps could provide. Oh, V said the food was pretty lousy.
