Pleasure, Little Treasure (the Depeche Mode item) Mark Unseen   May 2 02:03 UTC 1994

Well, since everyone else has items for their favorite bands, I felt like I
*had* to put up an item regarding my favorite band. Who here likes them?
Why? When were you first "drawn" to them? What are your favorite
songs? Which is your favorite member? Do you have tickets to either of
the two upcoming concerts in July? etc...

(I'm a hopeless DM fanatic at this point)

They're cool. I guess I'm new to the train, but
I was first drawn by 'enjoy the silence'.

Hmmm... as much as I like Mode, I don't really want to hear anything
about the upcoming concerts! I am mad right now at them. They took over
the July 4th weekend that was SUPPOSED to go to Jimmy Buffet. I took my
vacation for that weekend, planning to go to all the Buffet concerts, and
now DM has snuck in on that weekend. Grrrr...

On the other hand, was anyone lucky enough to get the X1 and X2 box sets
when they came out? I still kick myself for not getting X2 when I saw it
for a very decent price.

What's the deal with the X-box sets? They're the Japanese ones, right?
Every day I get messages from the mailing list about them... :)

They were ultra-rare. The US release was fairly easy to obtain.

Re #1- It was that same song that got me more than a little interested.

I never gave DM much more than a glance at first, until a guy I worked with
CONSTANTLY had their CD's playing every night he worked.

re #2: Thank you for expressing my feelings as well Curby! I'
I'm furious about DM playing on the 4th! (Red, white and Black!)

I have been a DM fan since their first album, but now I can't stand most of
their stuff. It's too poppy. Too dull. No album they ever do will ever
match "Some Great Reward" (and don't say "That was poppy too" it was
different!)
In the immortal words of my husband: "You're own Personal Cashflow!"

re#6: Their newer stuff is darker like SGR, but it's less poppy as well.
I don't like it as much thouhg.

re#7: hmm, probably Violator (or Music for the Masses) (or Black Celebration)

Depeche Mode always seems to me like one of those bands where if you like
anything from them, you like the first song of theirs you hear, fans
excluded, of course.

Yeah, that's your opinion, and you've made it very clear dozens of
times :)

Then there are those rap groups where you hear a song and instantly hate
everything they release :)

response 11 of 17: Mark Unseen   May 2 21:18 UTC 1994

actually, bdp, I hadn't gotten around to expressing such an opinion in
conferences yet, only in person. :)

...and it's not a bad thing to only have fans enjoy the music of a group,
nor is it all bad to have a particular form of music disliked. That's the
beauty of music and VARIETY, which DM lacks. :)

re: which tape to buy

If I were given only one of their releases to own, I would chose 101.
bdp
response 13 of 17: Mark Unseen   May 3 05:00 UTC 1994

101 is good if you already have some ffel for DM, I think.
(er, feel)

Carson, DM is into doing gospel, rap-ish stuff, metal-like stuff, and
acid rock now. They do ballads, pop, dance, techno-ish, piano pieces,
instrumentals, and more. You can't say they aren't diverse because you don't
know that. Why are you being so belligerent about them in an item that's
supposed to be for people who are *interested* in them? Go start your own
item! sheesh!

I am *interested* in DM, but I agree that they don't have alot of variety. By
that I mean it all has that brooding sound to it, even if the style changes.

Again, I stll think for someone just getting into DM, "Some Great Reward" can't
be beat (every song is excellent) followed closely by "Black Celebration".
bdp
response 15 of 17: Mark Unseen   May 4 00:59 UTC 1994

yeah, I think BC is better though. :) Yeah, the sound is brooding, but
their songs aren't necessarily depressing (with the exception of songs
like "Blasphemous Rumors" of course :) Most of them are upbeat
lyric-wise. Someone asked Martin Gore (songwriter) why the melodies are always
minor and he said that it's just easier to write about life that
way.

btw, the new Dead Can Dance (another minor-sounding band :) video on VH1
and MTV is *awesome* - check it out.

Ok, I realize this is a drift, but someone just told me the new Dead Can Dance
cd has a real middle Eastern feel to it? Has anyone else heard it? And what
do you think?
bdp
response 17 of 17: Mark Unseen   May 5 15:51 UTC 1994

yeah, definately... yes, I have, and yeah, it's excellent. :)
