I finally found confirmation today that CBC has cancelled the 
Saturday afternoon new-CD review program, SOUND ADVICE.

I enjoyed that show a lot and wish I'd gotten some of the shows
taped.  Bought a fair number of CDs from host Rick Phillips' reviews
and previews over the years.

This is part of the plan to slash classical music programming
on the CBC and to eliminate it from any time people might actually
be listening, in particular the drive time blocks.  Once HERE'S TO YOU,
the morning drive show, shuts down in a few weeks, I expect I'll 
remove CBC from my radio buttons.  All of the new CBC programming I 
have heard strikes me as seriously mediocre.

Rick Phillips has taken the Sound Advice brand and is starting a series
of podcasts under the auspices of Universal Music in Canada.  However, 
from a look at the playlists, it appears that everything being 
reviewed will be from Universal's labels:  Deutsche Grammophon and Decca.
The old show used to cover a lot of small Canadian independent labels.

Thanks for the tip, but we'll probably pass.  Nothing against Chopin, 
but I have found that big CD boxes just don't get played very much.
The last one we tried, a collection of Renaissance choral works by
composers Leslie really likes, bored our socks off and I was glad we
only spent $20 on it.  Maybe the problem was that it was all 
boy choirs; we tend to prefer grownup voices like The Sixteen.
