What's up with m-net? Mark Unseen   Sep 9 01:32 UTC 2000

I can't telnet to m-net

    Connect failed
and I can't access any of the web pages at www.arbornet.org
Cannot find server or DNS Error
    Internet Explorer

but ping says the machine is up:

and I can tracerout to it.

Any clue when telnet and web service are going to be back?

Dunno, but in Agora somebody mentioned that M-net had gone down.

No idea what's going on at present. I was out of town until this evening.

Working on it.

I've spoken to both Rex and Jamie. We aren't sure why we're down. All we
know at this point is that it isn't a connectivity issue, since some services
are still active. Mail is getting bounced with a "User unknown" message, for
example.

More details as we have them.

We've unplugged the M-Box from the network, and Rex is going over to WWNet
later today or early tomorrow to work on it.

Mail was getting bounced? I take it that means that nothing was spooled until
the m-box was unplugged?

"User unknown"? I hope this isn't related to newuser.

If it is, it can be repaired fairly easily. It wouldn't explain why
the box stopped responding to telnet and ssh, but left some services
running, though.

It might be intentional, but I can't get arbornet.org
resolved to an ip address, (I know it's unpluged, but still....)

nslookup arbornet.org

Server: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.1

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

Arbornet.org only has 2 NS servers. One is (apparently) arbornet
itself. The other is dns.wwnet.net, which appears to be sick (*long*
delay, then returns "SERVFAIL".) Since the "whois" everything contact is
at an arbornet address, there doesn't appear to be any way to send
e-mail to the person responsible for DNS for that domain. Also, the
phone number listed for that person is wrong.

hopefully it's just that newuser or something corrupted the password file,
and some services failed for lack of a root account.
that might be a tad tricky to fix, though.

re: 10 -- I'm getting the same thing...but I also have the same problem with
grex.cyberspace.org and an intermittent problem with grex.org. I had to use
the IP address to get here.

For a while I thought Ameritech had a broken DNS server.

It is, but I can't post. I get an error message saying that
/p/seldon/.cfdir/cf.buffer does not exist.

There is some sort of configuration problem. If you're one of the apparently
few people it affects, try removing any lines specifying an editor or pager
from your .cfonce. It worked for me.

I think we're having DNS problems. The same thing happened briefly last
night, and then we were reachable again. Keep checking, and I'll post when
I have more information (if Rex doesn't beat me to it).

Sounds like they need a smaller per-process file limit, and a larger
system file limit.
