Good question!

I believe the DX266 would be faster. I think the slc66 has a
smaller on board cache and no floating point coprocessor.
On the other hand, for most applications the smaller cache
is acceptable and many if not most apps do not use the coprocessor.

I have a 486DX266 @ work and a 486DLC33 at home and I don't
notice a large difference.

There was a BIG difference in price. The slc may be a better bargain.

The SLC is cheaper, and it is slower, especially with 32-bit
applications/Operating Systems. (argh, sorry about the word wrap there :)...
but like I said, it is a WHOLE lot cheaper...

the SLC uses 16 bit external archecture, the DX 32 bits.

The DX2-66 is significantly faster than the SLC2-66 for a few reasons:

1) DX2 is true 32-bit. SLC2 is 16-bit externally. To put it bluntly, the
   SLC2 is a 486 chip on a 386sx motherboard.

2) The FPU (Floating Point Unit, aka math coprocessor) on the SLC2 is
exteranl. The DX2's FPU is internal.

The SLC2 actually has more internal cache than the DX2 -- 16k vs. 8k. I've
done extensive tests on the SLC2 and the DX2, and the different benchmarks
actually tell quite a bit about the different benchmark programs. I/O on
the DX2 is much faster than the SLC2 -- hard disk access and video.

#2: The 486DX2-66 should be *MUCH MUCH* faster than the 486DLC-33. If it's
not, you most likely do not have local bus or have a very slow
video and/or hard disk on your 486DX2-66. The DLC is a 486 chip on a
386DX motherboard and it only has 1k internal cache.

What is the difference between a sx and an slc chip? Anybody know?

yes, the sx is made by cyrix, amd and intel. THe sx is made by
woops slc i mean is mad eby IBM. It is a different striing
of 486's .
