New Cheap word processors for the Mac. Mark Unseen   May 20 05:23 UTC 1994

I hope that this is the right place for this.

I am looking for a new (better?) word processor than MacWrite 5.0.1
I am between WriteNow and Thunder 7, both which are priced about the
same, but money being as tight as it is, I need more advice than what
I found in the MacWarehouse catalog. Word is not an option, because I
morally object to Microshaft.

Also, if anyone has the dictionary for MW 5, I would appreciate a
copy. My disk suffered a calamity that rendered it useless, and
unable to read. Thanks for the advice in advance.

I have a legal copy of Write Now 2.2 with all the doc's. $10 if you
want it Jim. (3.0 is the most recent. 2.2 was prior to that.)

I'll keep this in mind; but no doubt I'll wind up buying it.

 4.0 is just out.

One thing to consider is that by buying his 2.2, you should be eligible to
go to 4.0 as an upgrade later. That'll cost more than $10, but it should be
less than the $60 street price of a new WN4. You can probably call to
inquire. The publisher T/maker has apparently sold it to SoftKey Intl.

On your machine WN2.2 shoud be very serviceable. WriteNow is a best buy, IMO.

One question I must ask is... does it auto save your work in case you
have a crash? I have had a rash of crashes, and they really bug me.

I had Word 3.0 for my IBM and I was very happy with it, with no
intention to upgrade, although I will probably upgrade WN2.2

I don't think it does have an autosave feature, but there is an extension
called savomatic. It's on the umich mac archive.
its URL is gopher://gopher.archive.merit.edu:7055/40/mac/system.extension
s/cdev/savomatic1.51.sit.hqx

He's only entitled to a reduced-price upgrade, Steve, if the original
owner hasn't already upgraded the software to the latest version.
Most companies only allow a particular copy to be upgraded once,
to prevent people from transferring an old copy of the software around
like a reusable discount coupon.

I think that's all I was saying. I didn't mean he could upgrade for free.
But they will charge less than the street price of WN4 ($60), I'll wager.
The advantage for Jim is that he can postpone that expense, and get
by with a $10 version of WN2.2, a solid performer on a Mac Plus.

So I have read in MacUser. The guy that wrote the article said that
it was "among one of the best programs written". He also said Word
was comparable, but much slower. I am not looking to upgrade it.

Well, no, what I meant was that Jim may not be able to get an
upgrade price *at all* if the old copy of WN2.2 has already
been upgraded to WN4.

I got an offer in the mail, offering WN 4 for $39.95 Version 3 is
available from Mac's Place for 19.99.

This is the Sexiest wp I have ever used, and it gives you *perfect* letters
without a lot of hassle. I don't know why I waited so long.

I highly recommend this Wp to *any* macwrite user.

The WN2.2 that omni got from me has hever been upgraded. We got WN3.0
bundled with our PB, so no need.

WriteNow is probably the best, inexpensive WP for the Mac. Thunder 7
is a spell checker-- not a word processor.
