Pentium II

I am planning on buying a new computer. I am confused about the benefits of
spending the extra money for a Pentium II (P6) rather than a plain old Pentium
(P5) with MMX.
Can anyone explain what benefits I would see with the P6? (I am planning on
getting into digital photography.) Thanks

For 32 bit apps & NT / OS/2, P. Pro is better. (Adobe Photoshop 32 bit,
POVRAY, image processing). For 16 bit Pentium is faster.

Pentium II doesn't have as much 16 bit hit as Pro. It has the new
module design that goes with the new motherboard. Getting the II will
require you to buy now a motherboard that may live into the future a
while. Pentium is a board type that may go away sooner.

I hear that although P. II cache is greater than P. Pro,.
but the connection to the core is slower. On several programs
P. Pro is faster than P II. (200 vs 233 MHz)

That's not strange at all. The extra MMX instructions are great if you are
using things that use them, but for code that doesn't need them, it will slow
things down a bit.
At work, most of our servers have Pentium Pro CPUs in them. There would be
no reason to go MMX with those because they aren't doing anything that uses
it.

True. Servers should use Pentium Pro. I'm not happy with P II. The
only neat thing is that it doesn't have as much 16 bit hit, but that's
only a little neat.
