Some are a little cheaper, some are a whole lot more expensive (Radius is
planning a high-end $30K video-processing clone, Daystar Digital is planning
a photog/publishing Mac). Power Computing plans to sell clones for 10-15%
less than Apple equivalents, with very similar performance. Quality is a
question mark, since if they're for sale yet, they haven't been for long.
Cutting Edge was getting Apple motherboards from somewhere and sticking
them in their box, so those had true Apple quality, but I think they ran out
of supply, and are now planning to use a Power Computing motherboard.
If it were my money, I'd rather pay an extra 10% for the name. Benefits
would be: known company that isn't going to go under soon, repair centers
everywhere, better ensured compatibility (seems to be no prob at this point,
but I'd wonder about getting processor upgrades for a clone, for example),
and I bet Apples will retain better resale value. Though that may not be
a concern if she typically uses computers for five years or more, after
which the monitor may be worth more than the computer!
