Help! Printer problem Mark Unseen   Feb 25 04:09 UTC 1995

Help! My parents have purchased a nice new Compaq Presario, but wish to
continue using their perfectly good daisywheel printer (a Citizen Premiere
35). Unfortunately, when underlining text, the printer "skips" a line, so
that just the underline appears on a line by itself. For example,

texttexttexttext important word texttexttexttext
                 ______________
moretextmoretextmoretextmoretextmoretextmoretext

The printer worked just fine with an old XT clone running WordStar, so I
think the problem is in Word (6.0) or Windows (3.1). Does anyone have
any ideas of what might be wrong or how to fix it? By the way, a Print
Preview looks like it should with the underline properly placed. They are
using the "Generic/Text" printer in the setup.

I appreciate your help and suggestions!!!

It's supposed to generate a CR without a LF, but it is getting a LF anyway.
Sorry, I don't know why.

I found out something new about this problem from my folks: bold printing
does work properly (the printer goes back and double-strikes the word), so
it is just underlining.

Strange...I'd try contacting Citizen's tech support; they may have an
easy answer.

Hoorah! I got an answer from (moment of silence) Microsoft. On the second
try, though.

Rob, thanks for the suggestion - we did call Citizen. They suggested we
try another word processor. We used Write, which printed properly, thus
implicating Microsoft Word as the culprit. With this info in hand, Microsoft
was able to supply an answer.

For anyone else stuck with this particular problem, here is the fix:

Under Format menu, select Paragraph (dialog box comes up)
then, under Line Spacing, click on "single" to pull up a menu, and
select "Exactly". In the accompanying text box, remove "12 pt" and
type in "1.3 Li" (no quotes, but include space). Click "OK" and you
should be ready to go. Don't ask me why, but it does work :-)

Thanks, everyone, for scratching your noggins on this one. Much appreciated!

A different printer problem. We have a used Panasonic KX-P1124 i (for
improved) which came with no manual. It has LCD window instead of the rows
and columns and blinking lights of the old 1124. Works fine except that it
pauses for a couple of seconds at the end of every line (printing
bidirectionally, meaning at both ends of the carriage it pauses). It does
this in Wordperfect when set to emulate an Epson and when WP is using the
LQ-2500 definition. It does not pause when printing ASCII file using a simple
editor program written in Assembler language.
Does anyone know the solution or have the manual? My old 1124 without
the i has never had this problem. And I would like to know how to change the
settings in general, in more detail than is printed on the dust cover.
We would like a draft default (which I also have not managed to set on the
older printer despite following manual instructions).

Wow...finally a problem I think i can help with...!!

I have both the older kpx1124, and a "newer" kxp1124i. I bought the "i" for
$50 used, since I love the old one which has always been a real workhorse for
me, and still is.

I was lucky, I got _all_ the documentation (even the unpacking/repacking
instructions) when i bought this. As i use it, I've been discovering many
little things that are a bit different from the older model.

At the moment, i don't have time to read the entire manual for a detailed
answer, but if you have specific questions/problems let me know and I'll go
through the index to find you an answer.

On the face of it, the 1124i talks about "Epson LQ-850" mode commands (rather
than the LQ-2500), and "IBM Proprinter X24E" mode (rather than just IBM
proprinter).

By now, there must be a driver available for the 1124i which you can get from
corel. I use both WP5.0 and WP5.1 (both for DOS) on different machines and
use this printer with both. I can't recall which set-up I've been using (but
I think the WP5.1 had the kxp1124i driver...which doesn't work with WP5.0).

Give the different drivers a try as above, and if you still have trouble let
me know (sorry, I'm going to protect my manuals from loss, but I can copy some
pages if we can find out what you need.)

Many thanks, we are still using WP4.2 but plan to switch to 5.1 soon. Will
see if 4.2 has the LQ-850 definition, which hopefully will solve the problem.
Are there any advantages to the i model? We also have 2 working 1124 plain.

I haven't discovered any definite advantages to the "i" model, I only got it
because the plain 1124 works so well for me at the office. I more often use
my HP855c deskjet for more "fancy" applications.

One thing that I had to do though, if you're used to hitting the paper-cut
key (advances the paper to the seam so you can tear it off, then returns it
to top of page) on the old 1124, the paper cut button on the 1124i is the
_middle_ button, instead of the 1st (to the right). I've had to put a red
label above the button so I didn't keep unloading my paper by hitting that
1st button (which is function/on-line for the older 1124). ;-)

Thanks, I did not evenk now there was such a button. Will let you know when
we get the new printer definition installed if that corrected the problem.

I have a pause at the end of lines when printing with my Epson LQ-570.
I don't get the pause when printing ASCII text, but I get it when
printing from fancy stuff using fancy fonts that happen in an almost
graphics like mode. I'm pretty sure in my case that the delay is a
result of the printer needing the image of the whole line before it
starts, and the parallel port can't deliver data quite fast enough (at
least with the driver version I'm using).

Wordperfect 4.2 does not appear to have the LQ-850 definition. We will now
switch to WP5.1 (today?) and check that out.

And now, almost 6 years later, this looks like as good an item as any:

At home I have an HP LaserJet 5L. It prints pretty well, generally does what
I need it to do. The problem is the paper feeder: At this point, it almost
always now feeds at least 2 sheets every time, sometimes / often several at
once. Thank goodness this rarely results in a jam, but it is highly annoying,
and renders printing essentially mandatory attended mode. There must be
something out of adjustment, dirty, etc. with the feeding mechanism (rollers
etc.). Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Is this
something one can [try to] fix on one's own?

I thought all sheet-feeders did this. Both of ours do. I just remove the
blank sheets and put them back in. Maybe it would help to clean the black
rubber rollers with alcohol.

You can buy special laser printer cleaning sheets at the office supply stores.
These are solvent impregnated and are supposed to clear gunk off the various
rollers and such.

What solvent do they use? You can also buy tape-deck cleaning cassettes but
alcohol on a swab is cheaper and works better. And you could buy 'color TV
tuner cleaner' in a special can, with the same ingredients as 'TV tuner
cleaner' for non-color sets, at a much higher price than general purpose
electronic control cleaner (which also works on receivers and tape decks).

Re resp:12: You probably need a new "seperator pad". This site sells a
kit with the seperator pad and pickup rollers for $39.00:

I have no connection with All Laser Service except as a customer.

Excellent reference gull - thank you very much! :-) Does anyone have any
actual experience using either "cleaning sheets" or parts replacement for this
kind of paper feed problem?

I don't have experience with your particular model. However, I've cured
a LaserJet IID, a LaserJet III, and a LaserJet 4P of paper jam problems
by replacing the same types of parts. In my experience sanding or
cleaning the rollers is a temporary fix. It breaks the glaze, but the
underlying problem is that the rubber has lost its "stickiness" and
resiliancy.

Several HP printer models had a known defect with the grab rollers, and
HP offered a free repair kit to help solve this problem ... It's
basically a little sheet designed to attach a small additional piece of
rubber to the roller, so it wouldn't grab multiple sheets.

I had ordered (and used) the kit on my HP LJ1100, but that was 3 years
ago, and I've lost the URL to order the free kit.

My HP deskjet 520 grabs several sheets but usually only if I reuse paper that
had a staple in it, without first smoothing out the paper where the staple
was removed from. The bent paper must increase the friction. It helps to
straighten out the staple before removing it, instead of just pulling.
