Are you *really* Randolph "the young"? ;-)
Truthfully, none of the Indian people I know speak Hindi as their primary
language. They *know* Hindi, of course, and can speak to other Indian people
in Hindi. But they most often speak to people from another state using
English.
The people I know come from these states and speak these languages:
Maharashtra - Marathi (includes the Bombaywallas)
Andhra Pradesh - Telugu
Tamil Nadu - Tamil
Karnataka - Kannada
Orissa - Oriya
I guess if you met someone from Delhi they would speak Hindi primarily.
But I haven't had that kind of experience.

Yes, I know the primary languages of India, and I know that English is used
mainly for interstate communications, but I always wanted to learn Hindi for
some reason. I was just wondering if any non-native speakers had any
experiences with it.
