The Six-letter word game, 6th edition
|
May 11 23:59 UTC 1997 |
This is the six-letter word game. The way it works is like this: whoever is
"it" thinks of a six-letter word, and everyone else tries to guess what it is.
The word must be a real word found in some English dictionary, and likewise
each guess must be a real word. The person who is "it" scores each guess
with the number of letters it has in common with the goal. So for instance
if the goal is
waffle
then the guesses might go like this:
angles 0 (no letters in common)
banter 1 (both have an 'a' as the second letter)
puddle 2 (both end in "le")
wobble 3 (both begin with 'w' and end with "le")
etc. The game continues until someone guesses the word, at which point the
guesser becomes "it".
Complete rules may be found in ~rcurl/lettermatch.rules, and a list of all
the words used over the past 4 years is in ~rcurl/l.m.words .

I am currently "it" by virtue of having guessed kentn's last word, "palter".
Now I'm thinking of a six-letter word.
palter 0 (lastword)
You can find all the guesses so far in ~aruba/letter.match .

By the way, if you are reading this item at a time when it has a lot of
responses, you probably want to skip to the bottom and pick up the current
game there. Type "q" to get out of the pager, type "last" to see the last
response, and then type "-20" to see the last 20 responses.

At aruba's request, I have linked this item from Language to Intro. Any of
you language regulars have a thing or two to say to the intro people about
why they should join language?

Hi, intro people. You should join the language conference because you
would find lots of interesting language activities there. This game
happens to be the most active at the moment, but there are also active
items with users conversing in different languages. Then, you can also
learn when to use the restricitive and when to use the non-restrictive
relative pronouns!
[After you join language, you can forget this item in intro, and still
read the others, by entering the command forget at the Respond or Pass
prompt.]
