Local internet access from NJ and TX??? Mark Unseen   Aug 3 22:00 UTC 1994

Can anyone tell me how to find out or what are local access
phone numbers for the internet in the NorthWestern N.J. area and the
Irving, Tx. area???

Here in Northern Michigan I use our local
community college.

The cities in NJ are Sparta and Hackettstown.

Three things you might do: 1) read /home/rcurl/PDIAL.list, here, 2) telnet
to netfind.oc.com (Netfind has help menus, but you'll be lucky to find
accessible hosts (it provides *too* much info).), and 3) inquire in the
newsgroup alt.internet.access.wanted.

I've never accessed a newsgroup before. How do I go about that?

Also I'm not a Grex member so I can't telnet from here, but
I think that I can telnet some from my UB account, university of
NY at Buffalo. Not sure how much I can do there as a freenet
user though. Any idea of the best place to access these tools for
free??

I did give to the hard drive fund raiser but can't give a regular
$ yet.

I believe you can read usenet, even though not a member. You should
get familiar with it before posting. Enter trn at your prompt
(maybe !trn from bbs (?)), and wait. Go get a cup of coffee ;-).
Eventually you will get a greeting and, since you're new, lots of
warnings about how you can muck up the system, etc. Ignore all that.
Copy any of the faqs they offer. Enter an h for a command list.
Then, enter g alt.internet.access.wanted and you'll be a
at the newsgroup prompt. There will probably be told a couple of
hundred articles await you. Don't worry! Enter = . That will
list the titles of all the articles. They are all numbered. At the
end of the listing, enter the number of the article you want to
read. Keep that up until you are happy. That's enough for starters.
Enter q at the [npq] prompt, to quit. Study the command list.
There are different command lists at the newsgroup and the articles
level, so check both. Let me know if I made a mistake... ;->.

The only free internet access is usually for clients, like gopher,
finger, etc. A number of people get to grex via the internet for free
via msu-gopher. I seriously recommend that you join grex for a month,
and use the time to thoroughly explore what you can.

Thanks for the info, now i need the time to try it out. I do use the
MSU gopher to get to Grex. I start out in Petoskey, Mi. and here I
have an on ramp via NCMC our local community college. Thanks again.

For Irving Tx, there is a local provider that charges 8$ for 2hrs. of
connect time a day. Has e-mail, ftp, telnet, gopher, WWW, WAIS, and
some other stuff, but no usenet news feed. But all in all it isn't
bad for 8$ a month. It is International Online Services, and they can
be reached at (214) 922-0230 (Voice) I think I read they have nation
wide access numbers so they might have access from NJ too. Good luck ;-)
