Direct access to WWW hosts?
|
Apr 2 17:02 UTC 1994 |
How does one access a a WWW site directley? I have seen adresses
given in the form htp//:blah.blah or is it hml? Anyway my question is
when do we enter the adress? I tried from the Grex OK prompt and it didn't
work. Is there a point from inside lynx to enter the adress?

Use the Go command within Lynx to access whatever html pages
you have addresses for it, for instance, I just got this address:
http://cad.ucla.edu/repository/useful/iching.html
to get I-Ching readings on-line. Just type "G", followed by
the address, and you're set.

Well put, Rob. And if you like what you see there, don't forget to use
the "a" command in lynx to save the address in you bookmark file.
THen you can type "v" in lynx at any time to bring it up.

After you start lynx, follow the Internet link for a page full of
pointers to interesting things. Carl has put a lot of pointers
in various places in the lynx menus. Check out his personal home page too.
(Under "User's Files" in the Lynx Home Page.)

The links mentioned in #4 have been added to the "What's New on the
Internet" page.
If you're looking for cool places to go, there's more than I can
keep track of. From lynx, you could select "Access Users' Files" to
see what Grex people have prepared for the Web, or you could select
the "Explore the Entire Internet" option. From there:
* WWW Starting Points
Has many starting points for the web, including a list
of all known web sites. This is where I start if I want
to just "see what's out there."
* Topics of Interest
Has many different topics in no special order. I intended
this to be the place to make links to resources of interest
to Grex users. If anyone makes a request or mentions
something in a conference, I'll try to add new links.
Some day this area may be sorted, but not in the foreseeable
future.
* What's New on Grex?
Things available on Grex through lynx.
* What's New on the Internet?
Updates and new links to resources not stored on Grex.
This file is in reverse chronological order, so you can
easily view what's new.
* Hot Picks
These are resources of a temporary sort. The IRS forms
link will disappear after April 15. (Most of the links
currently there belong in the "Topics of Interest.")

To use the g command you need to know the http address of the site
you want to go to. It's likely to look something like
http://www.somethingorother.somethingelse
Otherwise, you need to find your way there through a series of links
from somewhere you *do* know, rather than using the g command. Use
arrow keys or tab to highlight an entry and press Enter; then repeat
this process until you get where you want to go.
