Proposal to restart & refocus the Internet/Network conference Mark Unseen   Jun 5 16:43 UTC 2001

In coop conference item 6 (item:coop,6) I have entered a proposal to
archive this current Internet conference (presumably as "Internet1"),
and to restart and refocus this conference.

Discussions of what the general public can do with the Internet
-- especially what could be done in the 1990s -- have become of
historic interest. I want to start a nuts-and-bolts conference
for discussions of how to make various pieces of the network
operate. My hope is that we can pick a little bit of the brains
of people who work on network issues professionally, and offer
a lifeline to people who have been called upon to make networking
work (either at work or at home) and who are scrambling for resources.

I propose that the conference have a new alias as the Network cf,
so that either "bbs internet" or "bbs network" would get here.
I propose to delete Chris Bartlett (bartlett) as fw, since his account
is reaped, and also to delete ecy, who !finger says hasn't logged on
since December. I nominate myself to be co-fw with Jeff Kaplan,
current FW.

Everything Ken said sounds fine to me. The conference has been so quiet
lately, I think there's some hope that Ken's plan will breathe some life into
the place.

Thanks for the email. I certainly haven't done nearly enough to be a FW
so removing me is a good idea. If the cf has been quiet, and if what people
originally talked about isn't germane any longer, could the potential topics
be handled in extant cf without starting a new one?

December, huh? Time flies.

Ann Arbor conferencing theory holds that eventually a large mass of dead
items overwhelms newcomers to any conference. This is why the general
conferences are restarted regularly. I think that has happened to
this conference.

((In the other conference I host, music, I have proposed a restart several
times, and each time the users shout me down. However, music is one of the
more active specialty conferences, so I haven't felt that I need to push
the issue.))

Note that nothing in this conference will be destroyed; it will all remain
available as "internet1" or "oldinternet" for as long as Grex lasts,
most likely.

And I certainly have no reason to sweep ecy out as FW if he'd like to
stick around. (Hi, nice to meet you!)

I'm all for "stretching" ("redefining") existing conferences instead of
creating more too-narrowly-specialized conferences. So I would be in favor
of this proposal.

OK, I'm busy this week, I'll talk to Jeff about my thoughts on next week's
Grexwalk, I expect.

No, that was "this week's" walk. :/
I'm tied up until Thursday June 14 at the earliest.

I'm sorry, life is overwhelming right now and I have no time to work
on this for another week or two.
