Mailing Lists Mark Unseen   Jan 16 14:38 UTC 1994

Which mailing lists do you subscribe to? Between my accounts here and
at the U-M Computing Club, I subscribe to:

SLOVAK-L (discussion of Slovaks and Slovakia)
ICOM (discusses ICOM radios)
COMMUNET (discussion of community networking systems and issues)
PUBLISH-L(desktop publishing)
CREATE (creativity)
HPV (human-powered vehicles; mostly recumbent bicycles)

I think I might be on a couple others, but the volume is so low
I've forgotten what they are.

23 responses total.

Where is a list of available mailing lists? I don't subscribe to any
(except mac.archives, and I'd rather read that in MTS-Confer anyway),
and I can see that I'm missing an additional way to get no work done
around the house.

That sounds like something I've seen posted on UseNet or somewhere like that.
No wait, maybe it's ftp'able from rtfm@mit.edu or some such.
I guess I don't know for sure, Rane, but I know it exists. sheepish <g>

On This Day, which is a daily almanac type newsletter, and a couple of
humor mailing lists (whose names escape me at the moment).

There is a list of more than 700 mailing lists posted to one of the
news.* newsgroups.

I just thought of another mailing list I belong to: the new mailing
lists mailing lists. This list is for announcing new lists and asking
about lists.

There is also a list of lists currently living in I think
/home/ecy/inet/interest.grp. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

It was there a second ago. I typed:

            ! cat /home/ecy/inet/interest.grp | more

and it appeared one page at a time.

(Carl, you don't have to cat it first. Just
   more /home/ecy/inet/interest.grp
would be approximately equivalent. Better, actually, in a couple of
respects.)

Just about any FAQ-type document you might want is available on
rtfm.mit.edu for anonymous FTP.

I'm on the RISKS list and the FIGLET list (both on another system,
since mail lists seem to be a big mail spool hog at times).

I subscribe to the Pipe Smokers Digest, and have for a couple of
years now. If you're an interested pipe smoker, send mail to
masticol@scr.siemens.com.

This weekend on public TV was a show about the internet. They were
describing the various capabilities, including explaining the difference
between usenet newsgroups and mail [subscription] lists.

They showed how to find out about the currently known list of lists. But
they did it so fast, I couldn't memorize it. It involved sending a message
to <someID>@rtfm.mit.edu where the message body contained just a line
something like "sendlist <half-a-line-of-goop>/part01".

If any of you know the exact details on how to do this, I'd appreciate it.

Simply send a message to any Listserver on BITnet such as:
to: LISTSERV@GUMNCC.TERENA.ORG
fr:
cc:
subject:
message: LISTS GLOBAL

Only the "to:" and "message:" fields are needed the Listserver will get
your return address from your mailer and automatically collect the list
of lists from all other known listservers and email it back to you.

You might also want to send for the LISTSERV User Guide at the above address.

Dumb newbie question: how do I subscribe to a mailing-list?
rcurl
response 17 of 23: Mark Unseen   Mar 20 08:14 UTC 1995

You send a message to the list handler, usually at an address like
listserv@<address>. Then, usually, you include one line of message
saying subscribe <list name> Your Name. The details may vary
a little between mailing lists.

That file was there almost three years ago. If it's not there now,
I'd suggest trying the other sources mentioned in this item. And don't
forget the web as a source of such information, too.

response 22 of 23: Mark Unseen   Jan 4 23:55 UTC 1997

Hmmm, responses 5, 10, and 15 in this item mention general sources
for lists of lists that should still be valid.
