I'll start with a question about equipment. What sort of board should
I buy to keep at my parents' vacation home in Massachusetts? I've
learned to sail on a Bic long board on a lake near Ann Arbor. I can
handle uphauling in gusty conditions, but have never experienced waves.
Usually sail with the centerboard up, but need to put it down to make
upwind progress. There should be pretty good winds out there in
Massachusetts. So, should I get a short board with no centerboard?
Will I fall off when I'm trying to get started? Will I have to walk
home after I get blown downwind? Or should I get another big stable board
like the one I have here?

"Go with what you know", I guess, related to "Go with what you can afford".
I've got access to a board, but I've only tried it once, on a non-windy day.

Another aspect to the decision is whether a board that would be good
for me would be impossible for friends to learn on. I'll probably just
go with what's available, whether it is known or affordable, or not, but
I want to at least pretend that I am carefully considering the matter.
What was your rate of progress on your first try, Scott?

I tried wind surfing once several years ago. I had a lot of fun, and made
it all the way across the lake. Then I discovered that going into the wind
was a lot harder than going with the wind. Somebody had to come out and pick
me up in a row boat.

Well, the next question is, where do people sail? I've got a board
on a lake near Ann Arbor, but there are only a few of us sailing here.
Where else do people sail around here? Are there any good spots for
a day or weekend trip in Michigan? More ambitiously--where is the best
place to go for a Caribbean vacation next winter?

I've only been to Silver Lake at the Pinkney Recreation area... If I ever find
time this summer, I may try it again. Silver Lake is pretty nice for sailing.
