Where are the best discount outlets in Ann Arbor (or vicinity) for slide
film, and Kodak slide film processing envelopes?

I would hazard a guess and say any of the discount drug stores like
Perry or F&M over in Arborland, or on Eisenhower, right next to Mervyn's

Hardly any of these carry film processing mailers (I have checked K-Mart,
Meijers and Perry).

Most of the ones I mentioned have thier own labs. I guess you could try
Ritz Camera or some professional photography store.

I've purchased film+mailers through mail order. Both Kodak (European
origin film rather than U.S. due to an anti-trust settlement years ago) and
Fuji. Kodak was Kodachrome, so I let their labs do the work, and Fuji
was their E-6. Look at the ads in any photography magazine. 47th street
and Adorama always come to mind, but I no longer recall where I got 'em.

about 10-15 yrs ago, My mom and I did our own printing and developing.
The C-41 kit used to cost about $15. The E-6 was considerably more.
It's not all that hard to do it yourself, but it's time comsuming,
not to mention a lot of trial and error when it comes to exposure times
and color filter adjustments.
There used to be a firm called Unicolor which made a C-41 clone, which
cost less and did an equally good job. Whatever happened to Unicolor??

I'm wedded to Kodachrome 64. I have purchased film and mailers by mail
order, but one has to buy quite a bit to break even with retail prices
locally, because of shipping and handling charges. Anyone interested
in a bulk purchase of film? (I subscribe to Pop.. Photo.., so could pick
a vendor).

Well, no takers on bulk order of film
Anyone interested in used Bell and Howell Model 1592 16mm motion picture
projector? UM Property Disposition has them for $40. (No, this is not
a Classified!) Does anyone *use* 16 mm film anymore? What has happened
to all the 16mm film inventories - converted to video? What are people
doing with their life-time collection of home 16mm movies? Do we need
an Obsolete Technologies Conference?

with half us running on ancient terminals and computers and the other
half using up to date equipment, I'm not quite sure that we need that.
Then again, us with the ancient relics probably out number the up to date
folks.

Photography was my favorite hobby and frequently my job from the begining
of my first camera (made by Kodak of metal for 126 film when I was about
5) until the end of my last photo lab job (Sun Photo in Ann Arbor in 1989).
So how's the photo industry been over the last 4.5 years? When reading
the recent PC Magazine with CDs on the cover I found myself wondering if I
could dust off my photo talents and find a job which uses them and my
computer talents. Do labs like Precision do a lot with electronic imaging
these days? Is there a definition of "photo-electronics"?

I have a rumon that Kodak has discontinued the processing-by-mail for
slide film. However I see film and processing still being sold together
in PopPhoto. And (to return to my initial question!), I have run out
of processing envelopes, and seek recommendations on reliable slide film
processing - testimonials, please.

I have a canon AE-1. I love it. I have taken some remarkable pictures with
it. I usually send my film to York and get back the pictures within a week.
They are not expensive and they seem to do good work. I mostly take pictures
of flowers and landscapes and the river. I have even been known to go wading
in creeks to get pictures of the creek bottom through the water. I use a wide
angle lens for extreme close ups and find that it works just fine.
York has an 800 number which you can find through the 800 directory
assistance. Barring this, I will look for my mailers and send you one if you
are interested. I have never gotten slides from them, but trying them
shouldn't hurt. All my photos have turned out well unless I made some mistake
on them..
