Do you have something to say about history? Enter it in this conference.

But remember, don't discuss military history. That leaves me out...

response 4 of 23: Mark Unseen   Jan 17 01:46 UTC 1994

Why not? Military history is very interesting. I wish I knew more about it.

In item 1, the fairwitness suggested avoiding military history.
Is a (non-violent) coup in order?

History repeats itself, and that's one of the things that's wrong with history.

re #5, sorry I probably forgot that.
Well that's a bummer, as I indicated in 4.
It's one thing to disapprove of military operations, but I can't see the
point of not talking about them. They won't go away if you ignore them.
In fact maybe they will if you talk about them *enough*.

If I remember what he said, his concern was the kind of discussion that
military-history buffs get into - endless & very technical discussions of
battles presupposing knowledge of details that no one else here would know.
I can't imagine that becoming a problem here, & I don't think polygon is
likely to suppress discussion of military history in any way, anyway. If
a coup could limit itself to a few items (at first, anyway), anyone who
objects can forget them. IMO items on military history would be welcome,
especially if they can be kept at a level non-specialists can relate to.

(Larry, I just put some words in your mouth, & you're entitled to object
if I'm wrong.)

hey! I proved remmers point by entering an item! I should do that more often!

I have reconsidered. Please consider my earlier comments on military
history retracted.

There's a good conference saving idea by a fairwitness! Here we go.... :)

(You left out where they took a side trip into the bushes, en route.)

History is little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes
of mankind.

I just listened on NPR to an account from a survivor of the Nazi siege
of Leningrad in 1942-44. It was quite moving. I think NPR was trying to
show a similarity to the current siege of Sarajevo.

I am afraid that the Sarajevans will not be rescued by their countrymen as
the Leningrad folks were. It seems that there are lots of holes in this
parallel.

Why vidar, are the realities of war too brutal for you?
This is the purpose of history. We study the past so we can learn from it.

Realities of war too brutal? Ha! I say old chap, you must have lost your
bloody mind. I love war as does my cousin.

response 20 of 23: Mark Unseen   Jan 30 01:53 UTC 1994

Then why do you run away (#16) in response to my #15?

response 21 of 23: Mark Unseen   Jan 30 15:30 UTC 1994

Because I couldn't think of any intelligent response except to tell you
that I was switching conferences.

response 22 of 23: Mark Unseen   Jan 31 06:10 UTC 1994

Well, I understand now, but it mislead me. Why did you have to say anything?
