Virus, flu, the current 'bug'

What are the expected symptoms of whatever virus is currently going around?
How does this year's flu differ from previous strains? Have you any
suggestions as to how to alleviate the symptoms, or make them go away sooner?

I ask because today Jim is feeling tired and dizzy, with head congestion and
slight headache and nausea but no fever, chills or respiratory symptoms. His
first two ideas were 'food poisoning' (I ate the same thing, no symptoms) and
allergy to sawdust. My immediate reaction was 'this sounds like something
other people have been complaining of, including nausea'. Is there some virus
going around with his symptoms, and if so, what happens on the second day,
and how long does it take before the sufferer is functional again, and
noninfectious? He has been sleeping until almost noon for the past few days,
and feeling tired, which sounds like an incubation period to me.
