Heat in the Thigh Mark Unseen   Jun 8 22:46 UTC 1998

Early this afternoon, the inside of my right thigh heated up for a good 5
minutes, and the pain from the heat lasted another ten. I later noticed a
zit-like growth around that area, but the radius of the heat/pain was far too
large to be result of the growth's growth, and besides, I've never FELT a zit
grow before. I eventually destroyed the growth, but I still don't know why
an isolated piece of my body would overheat. Is this serious.

Maybe it was an insect bite?

I spent nearly all of yesterday inside buldings, and I was wearing long pants,
so I doubt its an insect bite. It may very well be a boil, though.

Spiders live inside buildings, and many people are allergic to them.

I think I would have noticed a spider, considering the huge ones we tend to
have in this house. I also haven't heard of any spider's bite causing heat.

I suspect an insect bite too. If by "heat" you mean a burning sensation -well,
the fire ant was named for the pain its bite produces. I'm not suggesting
it could have been a fire ant (I don't recall where you live - fire ants
are only found in the southern states), but the symptoms are similar. Here
is what the MM says: "The fire ant sting usually results in immediate pain
and the development of a wheel-and-flare lesion, which often resolves in
45 min and gives rise to a sterile pustule at the sting site. This breaks
down within 30-70 h."

Yes, "wheal-and-flare lesion" is what it says.

Well, whatever it is, several good hot soaks are softening and shrinking it.

May be a boil... my mom got one, then my dad and brother. I was spared of the
plague. We think my dad brought the germ (bacteria or whatever) home, since at
the time he was spending long hours at the hospital when my grandmother was
dying of cancer.

There is some persistent virus going around that seems to be affecting the
immune system, in that both of us and a friend have had a series of little
infections, such as sore tongue, odd itching, skin infections, sore throats,
etc. Some viruses, including measles, attack the white blood cells, and thus
the body cannot fight off other infections as well. (AIDS does the same but
you can't fight it off). The virus can linger at least three months, probably
because of its effect on the immune system. All three of us thought we had
bit our tongue on the same side as the sore throat. Maybe this infection has
something to do with lowered immunity. Have you been feeling cold and tired
and a bit sneezy recently as well? ANd sleeping a lot? Diarrhea, swollen
glands, other such general symptoms but lots of them in a row?
If so, maybe some minor infection got out of control. Just a theory, but I
am also curious if other people have had a persistent virus.

As a matter of fact, yes.

Have you had any other symptoms of interest?

I have some bumps above my ankle that don't hurt, aren't discolored, but I
sometimes have mistaken for zits. I have often thought I've had a consistant
(7 years now) cold, but now I know I am allergic to some things, and I've
begun to learn what they are. Tired? Yes. Sneezy? You bet. Diarrhea?
Grab the adult diapers.

Do allergies cause diarrhea? What sorts of things are you allergic to? I
guess the immune system reacts similarly to real or imagined attackers, the
imaged ones being what you are allergic to. Do you get swollen glands?

My allegry which I have linked to chocolate does cause diarrhea. Nope, no
swollen glands that I'm aware of.
