Epstein-Barr Virus Mark Unseen   Aug 24 05:18 UTC 1996

Last year I was diagnosed as having the Epstein-Barr virus. The symptoms are
much like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but scientists have ruled EBV out as being
the cause of CFS.

What I'm looking for here is more information on EBV and ways of coping with
it.

Lots of stuff on the net about it - through search engines. I'll mail you
a "fact sheet"

Me, I'd love some info on Mono. I am getting better and can eat normally again
but still have the fatigue... I started back to work this week and it's so
hard! How does Mono become Hepatitis? I can relapse can't i?

once youve had mono, it's easier for you to get it again. i had a friend that
got mono every sept for 4-5 years in a row.....but i think that she's a
special case....

I had mono when I was in college. I was hospitalized with it. Then it was
called the "nurses" or "kissing" disease (I was dating a nurse then, so it
was both....). I never had a recurrence, though. Is there a connection with
hepatitis?

Not that I'm aware of. It does, however, hurt your immune system, so maybe
it makes it easier to get hepititis. That's another one of those questions
I wish I'd find an answer for.

when i went to the emergency room (was too tired to do anything and had not
eaten in 4 days) the doctor poked all aroiund my stomach (and where my lymph
nodes are). He said it was to check for swelling/pain there, because it's a
sign of either hepatitis or swelling of the spleen. Apparently this can happen
if mono is left untreated for a while... if you keep going at your normal pace
and don't rest. I am so tired all day long, but since I no longer have much
of a sore throat and am at work, people are forgetting that I still feel bad
and expect mne to return to my normal pace. Wrong! I am hoping I don't
relapse... but my throat is a bit more sore again.

I took a look on the web, where there is a lot on Mono. I learned it is
caused by the Epstein-Barr viru, or by CMV. Hook yourself to..

According to my doctor, what I apparently have is a form of EBV which has
mutated. Evidently, I had mono once upon a time (although I'm not sure when)
and the virus remained in my system. Over the course of years, it became the
form it is now, which comes out every time I'm under a great deal of stress.

I don't have web access (yet), so if any has seen anything on this reoccurring
type of EBV I'd appreciate them passing along the information.

Hmmm... I've been compiling lists of health-related sites for a project I'm
involved in. Haven't seen anything on EBV yet, but you might want to check
out the CDC. They have an infectious diseases section on the web.

You should be able to browse from here using lynx.

Wow! Thanks, rickyb. Guess I'll have to learn to use lynx now. :)

I too have had several bouts with mono and EBV. They are very scary because
they have left me unable to work for several months at a time. I have
*antique* equipment and don't think I can get on the net with my 1200 baud
modem, and 4mg MacPlus. Anything you can post here in health would be
*wonderful*.

I don't use lynx much, but from what i understand, if you are able to get
to-and use grex, you can use lynx (via grex).

get to a unix promp and type "lynx" (no quotes), or "!lynx" (no quotes) from
a non-unix prompt .... (I _think_).

it's menu driven, text-only and pretty self-explanatory.

I use lynx all the time, but I think you have to be a member for this
service.

Nope, not any more. Web access via lynx is now open to all.

Great - when did this happen?

Earlier this year, when Grex moved to the Sun 4 and some liberalized
internet access policies voted in by the members some time ago were
implemented.
