GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS!!!!!! Mark Unseen   Dec 7 09:06 UTC 1995

Welcom to the "HEALTH AND FITNESS" conferance. It's exactly what
it says it is....no hidden meanings or anything.

Here, the topics will range from excersice to dieting to natural remedies
to discussions on real diseases. Feel free to ask whatever questions
or answers that you might have. :)

And last but not least, please remember that we are not professionals, and
should not be taken as such. On the other hand, there are alot of people
in here that have some experiance with some of the things, and just might
have an answer to that burning question of yours. :)

Wonderful idea for a conference! Though it's been touched on in the Synthesis
conf, I'd like to get going on the "natural remedies" idea. Will do some
thinking on an approach and get back to ya with an item or two.

Here is what i want to know....I am 27 now and have been married for 8 years
now. When i got married I weighed in at a weak 127 lbs.. Now i weigh in
between 175 and 180. I am only 5'7" so its not like i carry it all that well.
I eat less now than I did when i was at 127 lbs..for heavens sake i used to
manage a pizza joint. That was all I ate..all day long..Now friends have told
me its metabolism and all that junk...The thing i dont get is that i am very
active..i work in a factory so i am usually doing alot of lifting and I am
always on my feet...I play hockey....I play softball from April till
October...Is there something wrong with me....?

You might have suffered one of the rites of adulthood... the "shift of
metabolism", as I call it. Happened to me around 24 or so, when all of sudden
what I ate mattered.

You might look at what you eat (fat, sugar, etc.) and make some changes.

Also bubu are yu solid muscle too? Remember muscle weighs more than fat.
I had tht problem too. I am not all flab and I weigh more than women who i
know are larger than me. It is the muscle Ihave. I don't have alot but it
is significant. At 180lbs you are susposed to eat 2200 calories a day to lose
weight. about a lb a week which is good but you don't sound fat to me bubu.
Take a good long look at your body in the mirror examine your body for
solidness and muscle you may only need to tone up or like scott said to cut
down on fat and sugar which are rather easy to load up on alot of iwth out
feeling really full believe me I know I got the way I am by eating high fat
foods, and sugar. year by year.
Hang in their Dan you will make it.. wwe will help each other.

No I am not all muscle.....MY arms and legs are in real good shape. My gut
on the other hand is not....I wouldn't mind weighing what I do if my gut was
more firmer...

I went through a major metabolism shock when I got pregnant the first time
at 27. I was about 115 before and gained 30 lbs so fast I didn't know
what happened. I was always hungrey, so I ate...and ate...and ate! But I
lost it all. Then I had my 2nd kid right before I turned 30. Losing it
got harder. After that my metabolism, formerly really fast (I could eat
all the sweets & junk I liked & never gain an ounce) got kindof normal. I
had to watch what I ate for the first time in my whole life.
Now I am pregnant w/my 4th kid, and I gained 10 lbs a month for the
2nd-4th months and finally slowed down to just two in the last month.
Metabolism is not my favorite word. Nor is exercise (sigh!)

response 23 of 51: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 16:51 UTC 1995

What I have read is that our matabolisms are susposed to be slow that that
is more normal..more efficient..burns what it should effectively..However it
doesn't make me feel normal at all...( compared to others)..I gained after
children...I started out with the doctors telling me to gain more and then
gaining it after their births...aaarrrgggghhh
and I was nursing them too...

An INDEX to medical FAQs was posted to usenet. I grabbed it and you can
read it in /u/rcurl/medical-FAQ

It is an index of internet information sources on a large number of medical
topics. FAQ archive locations, newsgroups and URLs are given. The FAQ
is subdivided into a number of major categories, with up to a dozen or
so specific topics in each category. The main categories are:

Chronic fatigue syndrome
Complimentary therapies/'Non-Western' medicine
Endocrinology
Gastroenterology
Infectious disease
Lifestyle and fitness
Miscellaneous
Musculoskeletal medicine
Neurology
Nutrition
Nursing
Obstetrics and gynaecology
Oncology
Ophthalmology
Otolaryngology
Paediatrics
Pathology
Pharmacology/clinical toxicology
Psychiatry and clinical pyshcology
Radiology
Respiratory medicine
Surgery
Urology

I didn't know the best way to present this. You might want to grep for
those major categories and following. Or, just download it and print it!
If anyone has a good idea on making it more accessible, please implement
it.
