Has anyone bought from DAMARK, "The Great [phone order] Deal Company"?
[They carry home and office electronics and misc.] They have a category
called "Factory serviced", which translates to products that have "been
returned to the manufacturer, inspected and serviced by the manufacturer
or an authorized service center, tested, repackaged and sold to DAMARK.
Most factory serviced merchandise is warranted by either the original
manufacturer or by the servicing contractor." [Its amazing how many things
have been "factory serviced" - from "programmable bread bakery", to "Canon
Business Copier".]

Has anyone had experience with DAMARK - and the terms and conditions
of "factory serviced" merchandise? Are they BARGAINS, or bargains???.

Damark is a good source for the *perceptive* buyer. Some of their
stuff is a GoodDeal (tm) and some of it, just isn't. If you see
something appetizing, disassemble the PR-text carefully.

Then assemble a list of questions and call them.

Using that model I've bought some stuff, and not bought other things.

What I've bought has been JustFine (tm). There was a single
incident of "id-don't-work" which was resolved in record time.

The factory refurbished stuff is also a good deal. Sometimes
you can find a better deal from elsewhere, but you need to be
plugged in to find it.

Most of the time these are "bargins," sometimes though, "BARGINS."

Is bargins/BARGINS the 'white-trash' spelling of 'bargains?'

I've never had a problem with Damark, but there are plenty of items
that are the same price as in stores for lower quality.
The same's true for Sam's Club, too. So be careful out there,
and know what the thing you're buying usually seels for.

what do they get for 1MB simms that run at 120ns? Best price I could
find was 49.95 per chip.

response 15 of 33: Mark Unseen   Dec 11 22:06 UTC 1994

$49.95 for 1MB 120ns SIMMs? Wow.

Call CCS, Inc. at 747-8440.

response 16 of 33: Mark Unseen   Dec 12 01:45 UTC 1994

My guess is that you can get an 8-chip 1MB SIMM from the Chip Merchant for
under $35. Call 1-800-426-6375. They may have an even better deal on
used memory. Used memory is a good option if it comes guaranteed to work,
because the age of memory chips does not contribute to their failure rate.
(unlike things with moving parts)

Re 15- I will in a few days.

re 16- These are the 30 pin Simms. Are we talking about the same thing
Steve?
srw
response 18 of 33: Mark Unseen   Dec 12 07:29 UTC 1994

Yup. The ones you need have 8 1Mebabit chips in a row, making a megabyte.
They have 30 pins, and I've seen them advertised new for $35. You'll
need two to replace your 2 256K simms, which will then be suitable for
bookmarks or coffee stirrers.

Jim, for your computer, all you need is 2 more 1M SIMMs to bring it up to
4M. Chip Merchant is a good place to go for memory. Call them @ (619)
654-2700, ext. 7 is you want used. They won't sell used if you call the
regular (800) 426-6375 ext. 3 number. (I've tried.)

Do you know if CM has Powerbook (145) upgrade simms (+4M is $169 @MacW)?

response 21 of 33: Mark Unseen   Dec 12 19:34 UTC 1994

Yep. Sez in their add: PB 145, 6M, $175
I don't know how they advertise PB memory. I have a PB 160 with 4M. If
I want to upgrade to 10 do I get 6M more or do I have to buy a 10M module?
rcurl
response 22 of 33: Mark Unseen   Dec 12 22:31 UTC 1994

For the PB 160 you buy 6M to add to your 4M. I seem to have misread the
MacW pricefor the 145B: CM's price is best so far. (I asked UM computer
sales, and got different answers from everyone on whether one removes or
does not remove 2M from the PB 145B to add 6M, to get 8M. Their price is
also much higher than CM.) Decisions, decisions....

Cool, I'm thinking about buying a Mac. Thanks guys

response 24 of 33: Mark Unseen   Jan 19 21:30 UTC 1995

re #22: now everyone says the 145B has 4M soldered in, so one needs 4M
as a plug in to go to 8. MacExtra has it for $94/4M, better than CM (but
they had only the used chip). Decision made.
