Did Cumputer Renaissance sell you the wrong part?

I was looking for a drive controller and called Computer Renaissance.  I
described to them what I wanted and how it would be used.  They said they had
just what I wanted, so I bought it.  It did not work, and the directions said
it was unlikely to work as I wanted.  Whem I took it back they refused to give
my money back and denied having told me that it would work.

Since then I have heard of several other instances where they did the same
thing.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with Computer Renaissance?

I'm curious about the details of why the controller wouldn't work for 
you.  Was it a situation where the controller obviously couldn't do what 
you had needed it to or more of an honest mistake on their part?

I worked at CR for several years.  When I was there we had people with 
widely varying degrees of technical expertise so sometimes people would 
mistakenly give out wrong information.  As far as the return policy 
goes, I have to agree with you.  While I was there I watched the return 
policy become ever more restrictive.  Eventually I became a manager and 
it was my duty to enforce the return policy which I often felt bad 
about.  Eventually I just decided to do whatever I felt was right (if 
possible).  Small item returns can easily be slipped through w/out 
incurring wrath from above.  

Anyway the owner is a pretty good person but his return policy was (is?) 
unnecessarily strict.  Persistence will usually get them to relent but 
it creates alot of bad faith to force customers to fight for a 
reasonable return.
