Screen turns white
|
Apr 28 04:17 UTC 1999 |
My monitor has developed a problem. As soon as I switch it on it works
properly. But slowly the screen becomes brighter and after a few minutes the
whole screen turns white. Have any of you encountered such a problem?
Please tell me what could be wrong and how to rectify it.
Thanks

I am not a hardware guy, but I guess, there is some component which controls
the brightness of the moniter, this component might have gone bad. I guess
as the circuit gets heated, the component behaves worser and worser.

Take the plastic back off the monitor and run it that way. When it turns
white, selectively cool various parts of the PC board until you notice it
getting better. Keep working at it till you narrow it down to a single
component if possible. Use a jet of air, etc, to do the selective cooling.
This is how the pros do it. Just be safe and don't zap yourself. If you
are afraid, hand it off to a service center.

I've noticed much the same thing in my laptop, but only if I'm running
it at 33.6 (it lets me choose between 9600 14.4 28.8 and 33.6) when I
set it to 28.8 the problem just seems to go away...

I opened the monitor and tested it as suggested. But blowing air from my
vaccum cleaner did not reduce the intensity. I noticed two knobs which
said focus and screen. Turning the focus knob made each pixel on the screen
smaller. Turning the screen knob actually solved my problem. It reduced
the intensity and the background colour was restored to black.
What if this problem recurs? The knob is already more than half way
turned in.

You're probably correcting the symptom, not the problem. The screen control
does the same thing as the brightness control, except moreso. :) It's
basically used to set the range the external brightness control operates
over.

Yup
You seem to be correct. It is just that it now takes a few hours for the
background to become bright. I dont think tha it could be due to a part
getting heated. Even when I let it cool and then switch the monitor on, now
the intensity increses faster. It usually takes about 6 hours for it to
'cool'(i.e for it to start from a black background).
Do hese symptoms suggest anything?
