|
Apr 29 10:07 UTC 1997 |
in process of obtaining a laptop for a friend who is far to skittish
even to park his car w/in 100 yards of a computer store. (there is
more of taht out 'there' than one would imagine).
so far i have collected the following sorts of 'fsbo' laptop modela
and am interested inteh collected wisdom around here as to the
huge caveats or huge drools, either in general or specifically.
from anything you have seen or heard or experienced .... impressions
warnings or appreciations for:
nec ultralite sl 25c
ast colorbook 4/25
toshiba 2135cs
toshiba t4500c
all these are selling between $350-$490, the 'right' price range.

Your friend sounds like a PowerBook 160 kind of person.

perhaps, but win 3.11 and the right software will work too, i haven
t seem too many powerboos (like, none) on the used market.
the preference is about 51/49 for a pc laptop.
any thoughts on the above?

The NEC has a nice active matrix screen, it's a 386 though. :-( I don't
anything about the other models.

We have an NEC notebook (a low end 486) at work that I use a lot. It's nice
in a lot of ways, especially the screen, but it's got the worst trackball
placement I've ever seen. If I were going to buy a notebook I would probably
buy a Toshiba, but since I don't have to pay for it I consider the NEC more
than good enough.
